The Sweet Nothing of Sundays 4th of July Edition Shhhh, I’m doing Sunday, My Silent Sunday. No Phone, No Text, No Emails, No Meetings...Silence.  Sometimes we flop all day and relax, read books, work in the garden, etc.- then go for an evening hike to get some exercise and enjoy the beauty of San Diego. Today we hiked a trail that pops us out (eventually) on the UCSD Medical Center in Science Research Park, adjacent to UCSD. There's a curious building here, it looks out of place. I've driven past this for years never noticing it; it took hiking to discover the obvious. What is this structure located in a garden, off the main road, just North of a parking lot?It may be because long before this was the UCSD Medical Center in Science Research Park, it was actually Camp Calvin B. Matthews 1...

Casa de Alvarado is a complex of 188 condos and town homes located in close proximity to SDSU. The complex was built in 1970 and continues to be very popular because of the generous size of the units and the location between College Ave and 70th St. on Alvarado Rd, a frontage road with easy access to Interstate 8. The trolley stop on Alvarado Rd is just a 5 minute walk from the complex providing easy access to the University, Mission Valley and downtown. The buildings on the back of the complex feature condos on 3 stories. They are 2 bedroom, 2 bath units at a surprisingly large 1139 square feet.   They also feature a long hallway of cabinets for an impressive amount of storage, and the master bedroom not only has a walk-in closet but a second exterior door leading to a hallway or outsi...

The magazine said the SDSU community wasted no time Instagramming and tweeting their photos of gorgeous San Diego views and even pets to prove why SDSU is a top college. San Diego real estate sales, after the just expired tax credits, look like they are about to soften again. It would seem that the federal tax credits merely postponed, delayed, or softened a meaningful and inevitable correction. Plus, I don’t know if low interest rates alone will keep existing home sales on the upswing, Don’t be fooled by the upcoming home sales reports because many of the homes that went under contract in April had closings scheduled for May and June. Just like we saw with Cash for Clunkers, these government cash programs just pull sales forward with little real new sales. “Expect a payback in July and August,” said Zillow economist Humphries, “A lot of current demand in the marketplace has been stolen from those months.” “The period of sustained, dramatic declines in ...

Some day I'm going to get into a car accident. I just know it. Whenever I'm out and about, I'm distracted by the signs of various businesses as I drive by them. I like to see not only the names of businesses but any exterior marketing that they might be doing. There's an Irish bar over near San Diego State University called Effin's Pub and Grill. I don't know if the owner's name is Effin, but I've always liked innuendos, and if you think hard enough, remembering that you're in college student territory, you can imagine all the effin language in this Irish bar, and the bar certainly plays it up. You can order "great big effin' tacos"; barbecue wings that are "effin' spicy"; an extra large one-topping pizza for just $9.99, a "great effin' deal"; or a pizza with everything on it, "the effi...
