In 1947, Palos Verdes College, a small, private, independent junior college opened at the current site of Rancho del Mar High School in Rolling Hills. The college initially occupied barracks which were used in WWII. The college, at its peak, served approximately 100 students. Some of the college's students included Elizabeth Taylor's brother, and Leslie Caron, the film star. The college had plans to construct a permanent campus, however fund raising was never adequate to realize these dreams, and the campus closed in 1955. The barracks buildings were used as administrative offices for the Palos Verdes School district after the college's closing. Palos Verdes College. Photo dated: September 12, 1947. This area beginning in 1944, before Hawthorne was extended past the current Via Valmonte, was a diatomaceous earth (dicalite) mine, that extended into the area now occupied by the Hillside Village shopping center. This mine at one time contained 300 acres and had been leased by the Great Lakes Carbon Corporation from the Vanderlip family, that still owned approx. 7,000 acres of the original 16,000 acres retained by Frank Vanderlip when he sold the land which made up the Palos Verdes Project. Another rich deposit was known to exist on a 165-acre tract near the crest of the Peninsula. For two years, the Great Lakes Carbon Corporation had been unsuccessfully attempting to purchase this property from the Vanderlip family. Finally, in July 1953, the Great Lakes Carbon Corporation purchased a...

You're ready to sell your home, but the market is heading south with no signs of an imminent turnaround.  What's a Seller to do?1.  Prepare your property and yourself.  If it's been several years or decades since you moved, one of the most profitable things you can do is revisit your property with the eyes of a buyer.  Better still, invite a real estate agent to walk through the property with you and make suggestions for maximizing the value of your property.  Take notes, this is important and can put thousands of dollars in your pocket.    Once the decision to move is made, emotionally move yourself from owner to seller.  It will be much easier to take those faded baby pictures and high school graduations photos off the living room wall.  Open the drapes and let the sunshine in.  After...

If you have a vacant property on the market for several months and have not received an acceptable offer, perhaps it's time to consider other options: 1.  Improve the CONDITION is usually my first suggestion. 2.  Reduce the PRICE. I know as a Seller this is not what you want to hear, but facts are facts and comps are comps. 3.  LEASE it. If the curb appeal is at its maximum and the interior pleases the eyes, then price may be the last variable to play with.  However, as a Seller, if your financial plans do not include "giving it away" you may want to consider leasing the property. Many buyers are unable to secure loans in these uncertain financial times, and leasing a home in their neighborhood of choice is often an attractive option.  The rising inventory of homes brings the supply and...

One of the stops on my recent European Mediterranean Cruise on Carnival Cruise lines was the ancient walled city of Dubrovnik, Croatia. This was one of the highlights of the trip and was an amazing adventure. If you visit the city, make sure that you pay the nominal fee and walk the full 2 mile walk along the top of the wall surrounding the city. It has amazing views of the ocean and the city. Part of my recent trip to Europe on a Carnival Mediterranean 12 day cruise was a day excursion to the Amalfi Coast. The drive is about a 2 hour drive on an unbelievably narrow and winding road about 200 feet above the ocean. It is very beautiful.      If you would like to see more pictures go to :  http://www.maureenmegowan.com/PageManager/Default.aspx/PageID=2106737&NF=1

Villa Narcissa, more commonly referred to as the Vanderlip Mansion, was constructed by Frank Vanderlip in the 1920's, and was one of the first homes constgructed on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Frank Vanderlip is known as "The Father of Palos Verdes". During the 1940's, Villa Narcissa, then occupied by Kelvin Vanderlip, Frank Vanderlip's son, hosted many Hollywood celebrities. Myrna Low, had lived there before World War II, and Paulette Goddard and Burgess Meredith had honeymooned there. In 1946, Kelvin hosted his good friend Ted Geisel (a.k.a "Dr. Seuss", the famous childrens book author) during the summer. In 1946, Kelvin married Elin Regine Brekke, of Norwegian descent. Dr. Seuss, in 1949, dedicated his book "Bartholomew and the Oobleck" to his godson, Kelvin, Jr., the son of Kelvin ...

The Palos Verdes Art Jury is run by the Palos Verdes Homeowners Association, which through deed restrictions on property in Palo Verdes Estates and the Miraleste area of Rancho Palos Verdes controls the artistic character of all home improvement and new construction in those areas. Any change to the exterior of a home in these areas must receive the approval of the Art Jury in addition to all required construction permits. The Art Jury preserves the originally intended architectural styles intended by the develpers of the original Palos Verdes Project ( See HISTORY OF PALOS VERDES ESTATES for the history and origination of the Palos Verdes Art Jury.
