Actor Nicolas Cage sold his Newport Beach, Calif., house last week for $35 million - setting a new record for Orange County.  Nicolas Cage paid $25 million for the nearly 0.6-acre property in 2005.  The buyer, 70-year-old Jerry Herbst, is owner, chairman and president of Las Vegas-based Terrible Herbst, which runs gas stations and other retail operations.  Orange County's previous record home-sale price was $30 million, a deal that closed in the summer of 2007 in Laguna Beach.

Starting tonight and running through Sunday night is the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade, once described by the New York Times as "One of the top ten holiday happenings in the nation".  Local Orange County boat owners decorate everything from kayaks to yachts in thousands of lights and decorations, and take them for a nighttime tour around the Newport Harbor. The parade starts at Collins Island at 6:30, and runs for 2 to 2 1/2 hours.  Click here for a map of the routes.Information on special events and viewing areas can be found on the Boat Parade Website.

 The next 6 months will be the sweet spot for purchasing. I suggest you take time to finish your financial house keeping. Pay off bills, Pay any liens or judgments, and limit your spending over the holidays.The best plan is to have a pre-approval, before you go house hunting. That will take all the uncertainty out of the experience.NAR is trying diligently to persuade the Senate to increase the FHA and Fannie Mae loan limits, before the end of the year.The Feds may have to lower the discount rate, one more time, this year. When you add all the factors together.....there is likely to be a tsunami of purchasing going on in 2008. Dunnells successfully steered his 105-ton river steamer Vaquero through upper Newport Bay in 1870, James and Robert McFadden rushed from Northern California by stagecoach to mark the inaugural voyage.Dunnells' trip cast new light on the bay, which many had said was too treacherous for travel.     The One One Committee is hosting a golf tournament this year, it will be held at the Newport Country Club, along with a charity auction.  Dan Marcheano assures me that Golf Tournament will be one of the best events of the year.  The community has always shown great support for the Marines, and this event is no exception.
