The California Gray Whale is migrates in the fall and spring. Whale watching is a staple for school children's field trips. I know I've spent many a cold wintere day on those boats searching for the ellusive Gray Whale...both as a child and with my own kids. Certainly was very exciting when we found one. Did you know that you can go whale watching in the summer months also? Not the Gray Whale but the Giant Blue Whale. While these beautiful mammals were once quite rare, now they are a common sight off the California Coast in the summer and early fall. As the name implies, these whale are huge, twice the size of the California Gray Whale. The Giant Blue Whale is the largest of all animals and can reach lengths of 100 feet. Another difference is that the Giant Blue Whales are not as shy...

1776 Flags are Flying High Above Newport Beach Armed Forces Day in Newport Beach is one of an ongoing series of blog posts in my Weekend Quest category. This event takes place the weekend of May 17th to 19th in Newport Beach.  The Field of Honor: The Exchange Club of Newport Harbor celebrates Armed Forces Day with a Field of Honor. It is situated in Castaway Park in Newport Beach which is truly a beautiful setting. Here you walk along the bluffs above Newport Back Bay with strikingly beautiful views of the Harbor, Back Bay and the City of Newport Beach. This is a "natural park" with restored California native plants, it is an escape from the stress of urban living.  Flanking the walkways through the park and along the bluff are 1776 American Flags. It is a compelling sight, one not to be...

California has been attracting, and growing talented artists for well over 100-years. This Sunday is the Balboa Island Art Walk, your chance to meet select local artist.  This painting was painted by Louis Betts in 1907 to attract people from the Mid West and East Coast to California's perfect climate. I choose it because in 1907 Balboa Island was in the process of being created. Dredged from Newport Harbor and originally marketed as a resort for people escaping the heat of Summer in Los Angles and Pasadena, it is now one of Newport Beach's wonderful, historic communities. If you are tired of "living behind a garage door" in our typical Southern California developments, this will be an eye opening treat. Balboa Island is a small town, your town kind of place. A place where you can walk ...
