Apple Days in Julian CA – An Annual Festival and Visit October 2011   We took our annual trip to Julian today – we actually go more than that but always make a journey at apple season. Having lived in New England for many years, picking apples became a huge tradition, and we have continued here in Southern California.   Today we picked Bartlett pears at O’Dell’s organic orchard in Julian, but by-passed the Apple Days Festival at Menghini Winery – what a mob scene THAT was. Laziness set in so we bought a bag of apples on the trip out of town.   Lunch was at a favorite and regular eatery, The Julian Bar and Grille in the heart of town across from the Julian Pie Company. Julian, California - is my favorite, small town Tourist destination.  It's like stepping back in history and one of the tell tale signs that Julian caters to the public in a unique way is this horse drawn stagecoach that goes through the town of Julian. Julian Apple Days Celebration The Julian Apple Days Festival is no longer just a weekend event and is now an almost two month long celebration of Mother Natures Apple Harvest in the historic gold rush town of Julian. Julian, although a small town whose population has never exceed 600 people, became famous for it's many apple orchards and it's apples won first place at the world's fair  back in Chicago in the early 1800's. The town or Julian has to it's credit winning one of the firs ever Wilder Awards, the highest award given by it's Pomological Society for the quality of it's apples. A Visit to Julian CA in Apple Season   For those of us living in Southern California along the course, Julian and other inland mountain communities are a world apart. Perhaps that part of the appeal.  We have beaches, sand and palm trees - they have pine trees, mountains and more leaves that turn colors.  Part of the draw is the history - Julian was a gold mining town in the late 1800s and there are still mines to explore. And you will see all sorts of reminders of that history in the buildings, signage, and the names of places to shop, eat and sleep.  Julian is worth a visit any time, although more shops and restaurants are closed in the winter. On Sunday my family and I took a drive up the mountains to visit Julian, California.  Julian is an old fashioned mining town in the east county of San Diego and known for the finest apples in Southern California. Our main purpose for the trip was to start our "Fall Season" with a piece of Julian apple pie.  Thousands of people visit Julian the months of September through November for this taste treat.  We patiently stood in line at the Julian Pie Company for our pieces of Dutch apple pie slightly warmed with ice cream and topped with caramel sauce, a slice of apple pie with cinnamon ice cream and the traditional apple pie with cheddar cheese melted on top.  Definitely worth the drive and the wait and we planned another trip up to Julian before the season is over.  Hope to see you there!    09/20/2010
