Well, as of today, Forbes magazine announced its latest market analysis and Silicon Valley seems to be doing OK.Forbes Magazine has noticed the annual increase from those cities and others. That's right, Gilroy, the garlic capital of the world now has less garlic. A shame really. The biggest grower used to have 40 acres of the stuff. I live in the next town to the north and even way up here we can often smell the stuff. I did notice that there was less of a smell this year.That fella with the 40 acres? Well, urban sprawl has made it more profitable for him to sell that land off to developers who will build homes that (in todays market) are not too likely to sell for a really long time. Right now, he only has 10 acres of land left growing garlic.So where is all the garlic coming from? The demand is still there, so you can't just stop growing the stuff. The Morgan Hill Times is reporting that if the current owners of 5,600 acres of ranch land do not pay the past due tax bill, the county will be able to purchase the land for the price of the past due taxes and turn over to the parks and recreation department.I don't think that I have a problem with  seizing the land - that part makes sense. However, I don't like it when government just reaps the benefit from a situation like this. The amount they would be paying for the land is far below market and no other parties are allowed to bid for the land. Don't get me wrong. I actually like the idea of that area becoming a park.
