San Diego Real Estate Holidays at The Hotel Del Coronado Every Year, it is tradition to make my way over to the Grandest Hotel in all of Southern California to take in the decorations and holiday festivities. The Hotel Del Coronado's Holiday theme this year is the "Sweetest Season". The Hotel is decked out from top to bottom with sugarplums, peppermint swirls, lollipops and many other holiday treats and decorations. The Hotel is trimmed in over 100,000 lights outlining the entire resort. As in just the past 5 years, the hotel's major attraction, 2nd only to the enormous Christmas Tree in the grand lobby,  is the ice skating rink. Billed as "Skating by the Sea". The frozen ice would defy logic as it is just steps to the ocean ( still at above 60 degrees ) and the enormous sandy beach wi...

Christmas At The Hotel Del Coronado Christmas time in San Diego is never quite complete without a visit to the famous Hotel Del. Their Christmas displays are simply amazing and they have many things going on for their residents as well as visitors.   One of their really big draws is Skating by the Sea in it's 6th year. An outside ice skating rink was set up on the Windsor lawn right on the edge of the ocean. The enormous tree in the lobby is of course the main draw as the decorations are in themselves, each works of art. The Christmas theme this year is "Sweetness Season" and the decorations throughout the hotel and grounds add so much in the way of holiday spirit. Everywhere you look you will find sugarplums , peppermint sticks and lollipops. The stately buildings and details are com...

Don't Miss The Lighting of The Hotel Del Coronado Tonight Tonight at the Hotel Del Coronado not only will this San Diego icon continue the annual tradition of "the lighting of the Del", but they will also have a wonderful holiday festival. The holiday festival will feature an outdoor ice rink, Santa's village where the little tots can get their pictures with Ole Saint Nick and booths with games and prizes. The festivities start at 4pm and end at 7pm.

Victorian architecture in Coronado It is often said that things start in California and move east across the country — real estate collapse, real estate recovery, etc. However, when it comes to architecture, it's pretty obvious that things started back east and moved west across the country. San Diego doesn't really have an architectural style of its own, certainly nothing like Santa Fe's adobe, or San Francisco's Victorian, or Chicago's prairie school. Instead, San Diego is a conglomeration of lots of styles, more prevalent in some areas than others. For example, if you go to Coronado, you can find just about any style that interests you. Following is one of my favorite houses in Coronado, a beautiful and well-maintained house that I want to say is Victorian architecture, but I really...

Last Sunday we took a drive over to Coronado to Fleet Week's Speed Festival and as we were crossing over the bridge we saw a small auto show at Tideland Park.  The annual Camaro Car Show was being held from 9 am to 2 pm and hosted by the San Diego Camaro Car Club.  Not only were there some great looking muscle cars, but all makes and models were welcome.  Here are some photos from the event.

Should Ghost Hunters Come to The Hotel Del Coronado? If you are anything like me, you can not wait for Wednesday night and the next episode of Ghost Hunters. I love to see the locations TAPS are going to visit and what they may find. I love how they visit so many historic places with years of reported haunting. I have a few personal experiences with the paranormal, and find it fascinating. In a recent episode, TAPS was doing an investigation at the Orleans Inn in Cape Cod. I said to my husband who hates loves the show as much as I do, "Wouldn't it be great for TAPS to investigate The Del?" He mumbled something that sounded like "I could give a  That would be cool!" The Hotel Del Coronado is one of San Diego's greatest tourist attractions. Built in 1888, now a National Historic Landmark,...

The 13th Annual Fleet Week Coronado Speed Festival was held at the Naval Air Station North Island this past weekend.  The Speed Festival featured over 200 of the world's top racing cars competing on a 1.7 mile course, which was built on top of an active Naval runway.  There was an enthusiastic crowd watching the day long racing events and touring the military displays and navy ship tours.  My family loves military events and always try to honor and celebrate the men and women of the military by attending Fleet Week and other celebrations... looking forward to this weekend's Miramar Air Show!

This is one of a series titledOut & About with Jim Frimmer, your Realtor in Mission Valley.Read others in this series by click on Out & About. Various official San Diego sources state that San Diego has the second largest population of military personnel in the free world, behind the Arlington/District of Columbia area. Some estimates put the total military population at 225,000. It's no surprise, then, that the various cities here in San Diego County like to honor the military personnel who live in their cities, and that brings us to Fleet Week San Diego (actually the whole month of September) and the Coronado Speed Festival. The 13th Annual Fleet Week Coronado Speed Festival takes place September 25 and 26. The parking lot opens at 7:30 a.m., gates open at 8:00 a.m., and races take p...

Most Realtors and home owners agree that it is still a buyer's market around the country and here locally in Coronado and San Diego.  However, sales are increasing and home prices have risen in some areas in 2010. Even though the qualification process for home loans is more stringent these days, money is still being lent and interest rates remain at all time lows. If you already own your dream home it might be time to consider a second home or real estate investment in San Diego. In addition, it's still a great time to sell a home.  As a seller, one of the first things you must evaluate is the desirability of your location. While the national economy and housing market are important to a certain degree, the market conditions you should be looking at are localized statistics. Markets an...

San Diego Real Estate Photo Blog- Coronado Island   The city of Coronado was established in 1888. It is home to the world famous Hotel Del Coronado and is accessed today via the Coronado Bridge. The bridge was opened in 1969 and spans from San Diego to Coronado. Originally the Coronado Bridge was established  as a toll bridge  to pay off the bond  that used for financing the bridge. Currently it is toll free. But the toll booths gates remain even after the tool booths themselves were removed. There is also a Ferry service from San Diego for those who do not need a car. There are usually quite a number of Day trippers  enjoying the Village as well as the many fine restaurants, public beaches and Village shops. Coronado Island  is actually not an island but a peninsula . It is surrounded ...

This is one of a series titledOut & About San Diegowith Jim Frimmer, your Mission Valley Realtor.Read others in this seriesright here. ♪♫♫☺♫♫♪   No trip to San Diego would be complete without a ride over San Diego's signature piece of public art: the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge.        Most of us know it simply as the Coronado Bridge because it lets us get quickly to the magnificent island of Coronado without having to buy a boat or drive around San Diego Bay — 15 miles down one side and then 15 miles back up the other side. Of course, then there would be the return trip, too!   The Coronado Bridge was built in the late 1960s, originally as a toll road. Tolls were supposed to cease when the bonds were paid off, which occurred in 1986, but tolls were collected for another 16 years, and...

Way back in the 1960s and 1970s, a condo developer (probably from Florida) decided that the City of Coronado needed ten 15-story luxury condominium towers overlooking the city and its famous beaches. At the time there were no zoning laws to prevent the developer from doing what developers like to do: develop! While the first tower was being built, the City tried to enforce a 40-foot height limit, but there was no law in place stating such a limit. The City lost, and the first tower was completed in June 1971. While subsequent condominium towers were being built, the City and its 26,000 citizens were deciding that never again would a developer come into Coronado and build monster towers in its domain. Buildings now are limited to a height of 40-feet or three stories, which is part of wh...

Nine Coronado Island real estate listings closed in January 2010 per the Sandicor MLS. The sale prices ranged from $540,000 to $2,100,000. Sale price/square foot ranged from $462.50/sf to $1,627.02/sf. Six of the nine closed Coronado Island real estate listings were detached homes (the other three were condos. Six of the nine were transactions in which each side had it's own agent (a seller's agent and a buyer's agent). Three of the nine were possible dual agent scenarios. These three transactions had one brokerage representing both the buyer and the seller (interestingly enough, it was the same brokerage for all three transactions). Sandicor lists the selling brokerage and the buyer's brokerage as the same brokerage, but it is unclear whether the brokerage was working only for the sell...

One of the great tourist traps in San Diego County is Coronado Island, although technically it's a peninsula. One of the great little museums to visit in Coronado is the Coronado Historical Association Museum of History and Art at 1100 Orange Avenue. They have three galleries, of which one has rotating exhibits. One of the recent exhibits was about L. Frank Baum (1856-1919), the author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Frank Baum was born in Chittenango, New York, and oftened wintered in the San Diego area, usually in Coronado and La Jolla. He owned a home in Coronado overlooking Star Park: Back in 1886 when Star Park was dedicated, the star you see in the picture were flowers. In the park, you can find several memorials, including the Star Park dedication: The house that Frank Baum owned...

The passings of two great entrepreneurs are being mourned by friends and family. Glen Bell Jr., founder of the Taco Bell restaurant chain, passed away Sunday in his home at Rancho Santa Fe, California. "Glen Bell was a visionary and innovator in the restaurant industry, as well as a dedicated family man," said a statement on the company's Web site. Bell started the chain as Taco Tias in 1954 and opened his first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. In 1978, he sold the chain to Pepsi, which later sold it to Yum! Brands that also owns KFC and Pizza Hut. Bell supported many local organizations and was one of the early inductees to the San Diego Junior Achievement Hall of Fame. ***** It was also reported that Art Bartlett, founder of Century 21, passed away on New Year's Eve at his home in Coronad...
