Been fighting a cold all weekend.  Today I woke up with a splitting headache, stufy head, and sore throat.  Decided to lay low today and take it easy. By noon, I could not get rid of my headache so I relied on my old holistic remedy.  Going to the beach.  I've always found the salty ocean air helped decongest a stuffy head.USCG either doing a rescue or training off Doran Beach Got to watch a Coast Guard helicopter hovering above a drifting boat the entire time I was at the beach (45 mins).  Saw a rescue basket going up and down.  Not sure what was going on, but it was interesting.  Gotta love living in California!

As of this writing, the absorption rate is 4.9 (months), meaning if no new listings were introduced to the market, there would be no homes left for sale within 147 days. The absorption rate, which is the # of properties currently available compared to the average # of sales in previous months, is the indicator of whether we are experiencing a buyer or sellers market. We are slightly t...

Twice in the last week, I have been contacted through Active Rain by Genealogists and Historians who have read my posts. Just by blogging about local oddities or historical structures, I've caught the eye of Internet researchers who are seeking more information about an area they are not or no longer a part of. One reader is searching for more information about the past owner of The Tides Wharf in Bodega Bay. The Tides was one of the sets of Alfred Hitchcock's classic movie "The Birds". Several times I have posted photos of "The Birds" location sets (for example the school house, above) or to let folks know when Tippi Hedren would be in town to sign autographs. As far as the historical nature of my posts, I can personally only go back as far as 1988 when I moved to Sonoma County. I r...

I don't know about you, but the first time I saw Alfred Hitchcock's THE BIRDS I was terrified. It took almost 20 years for me to watch that movie for a second time. Now that 40 years have passed, I have a different appreciation for this movie ... it was filmed in Sonoma County where I live. Of course things look a bit different now, but the scenery is totally recognizable. The church, the school house, the harbor, the streets. The Tides Wharf, where Tippi will be signing autographs, has been completely re-built (remember the bar scene when the gas station blows up?). I was told the staff had gotten to the point where they were afraid they would fall through the floor and into the harbor. It's beautiful now! Tippi, mother of Melanie Griffith, is now 82 years old. I really appreciate...

We had a real treat this past week in Bodega Bay, when Tall Ships based out of Grays Harbor, Washington, paid us a visit. According to the local paper, Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain have never been here before and their presence was an instant hit. Actually ... too much of a hit. Thousands of curious locals descended upon the tiny hamlet of Bodega Bay to get a closer look. Hundreds of folks had to be turned away due to lack of parking and lack of hours in the day. I got lucky and took advantage of a mis-print in the paper that had the wrong date of arrival. I rushed to the harbor and was able to tour Lady Washington with time to spare. On Saturday and Sunday, the boats headed out of the harbor into Bodega Bay for a mock battle. It was pretty cool to hear the cannons and see...

After showing Bodega Bay property last week I took a leisurely drive up the coast. There are a few homes facing the risk certainty of falling into the ocean. This image shows the residue of former waterfront land now existing as rocks off the shore. Coastal property that fronts the ocean is beautiful and valuable, but just on loan from nature.

Another reason it’s time to buy a home now;  Many banks are jumping into the lending environment in order to make any spread at all & are driving low prices even lower, as well as again lowering credit underwriting standards.  Read more about our economic signs of recovery.

Tippi Hedren will once again grace us with her presence at The Tides Wharf in Bodega Bay, CA this Memorial Day Weekend. The Tides Wharf was one of the locations for the filming of Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" in the early 1960's. Visitors come from all over the world to see landmarks from the movie including the Church and Schoolhouse in the town of Bodega and The Tides Wharf and Bodega Harbor in the town of Bodega Bay. The Tides Wharf Restaurant and parking lot were used for the gas station, cafe and boat docking scenes. When the (then) owner of The Tides (Mitch Zankich) agreed to allow Hitchcock the use his restaurant in “The Birds” he made three stipulations; 1) the town in the movie would be called Bodega Bay2) the male lead (played by Rod Taylor) would be named Mitch3) Zankich w...

I'll be the first to admit this photo doesn't look like much, but it's what you don't see that speaks louder than words. What looks like a small round pond, started out as a man-made hole that spreads 142 feet across and 120 feet down. You could lower a 10 story building into this hole if it wasn't filled with rain water. This hole, known as "Hole in the Head", was not dug to provide the public with a place to swim. This was going to be the location of a nuclear power plant. The utility company behind it (Pacific Gas & Electric) was building "the biggest boiling water reactor yet scheduled". The plan was to boil ocean water ... the Pacific Ocean. "Hole in the Head" is located on Bodega Head (hence the name) in Bodega Bay, CA. From the beginning, this "project" was scrutinized by a ha...

When folks visit Bodega Bay, CA they are usually trying to find all of the film locations from Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds". They can be found, they just don't look much the same anymore. The Tides Restaurant and Wharf was completely rebuilt in 1990 and has no semblance whatsoever of the film version in 1963. But this week, all of the activity is centered around Spud Point Marina. Commercial crab fishing starts Sunday and the word is that the Dungeness crab are plentiful and big this year. Sport fishermen got a head start last week, and they have been hauling in their limit of 10 crabs each within an hour. Sunday the commercial boats will be trudging out Bodega Harbor, the same harbor that Tippi Hedron was crossing to deliver the caged love birds to Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor). Hopeful...

If you could see my face right now, you would laugh. Because I did not wear sunscreen yesterday. I can't tell you the velocity of the winds in Bodega Bay, but suffice to say that as my husband was tapping on the car window, bouncing up and down and yelling, "There's a whale; let's go look at a whale," I wasn't about to place my seat in its upright position and subject my tender little ears to the wind again. Not even for a whale. Nope, I had a warm, sunny spot in the car, and that's where I planned to stay.                                     We hiked to the top of the trail, fighting our way past thistle. On the way, the path suddenly narrowed and you could tell that we found the spot where a lot of former hikers turned around. But it was only another 1/2 mile or so to the top, and th...
