Smoke Detectors can give you a false sense of security Ionization type or "the cheap alternative - photoelectric". So many people have fallen into the trap of just looking at the price of an item and taking the lowest priced item... not always the best as in any business quite often you get what you pay for. For the small price difference go with the Ionization type and do yourself a favor. The photoelectric type don't always see the smoke quick enough and when they do you may find that you can't see your way out of the structure. We purchased this Altadena property in the fall of 2012.  It was on a very quaint street, which Altadena and Pasadena are full of.  Neighborhoods in these areas are famous for their character, so we had our work cut out for us.  The project went relatively smoothly, with the exception of the countless city inspections that took place. Getting a simple permit sign-off on a new heater turned into getting permits for numerous items, including fixes we didn't even do (the past homeowner did them years ago).  One of the most frustrating hiccups were the two front windows, that again we didn't touch, being called out for being a couple inches too high and too narrow.  We had to cut into the wall and move them (literally 2 inches) down.  And of course, these windows weren't standard size so we...
