 Alameda Walks – 2018 Schedule  The Alameda Recreation and Parks Department sponsor Alameda Walks,  a program started in 2003.  The program was initially a collaboration of the Alameda Recreation and Park Department, Pedestrian Friendly Alameda and Alameda Collaborative for Children, Youth & Families.  According to Patrick Russi, Recreation Supervisor, Alameda Recreation & Parks,  the goal was to get people out of their homes on Saturday mornings for a little exercise and a chance learn a little about the city of Alameda.  Patrick also notes that while ARPD loves the furry pets, they prefer that they wait for you at home. Alameda Walks are held the first 2 Saturdays of each month from May to October.  The walks are usually an hour long and are easy unless otherwise noted.  Some are arch...

  The Contentious History of Measure A(Preserving Homes or Promoting Exclusion?  Rasheed Shabazz, local historian, will give an overview of the history and current status of Measure A on Tuesday, April 24 at 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at the Alameda Free Library.  The initiative prohibited construction of multi-family apartment building in Alameda and preserved many of the architecturally significant homes which were being demolished wholesale in the early 1970’s.     Opponents allege that Measure A, adopted in 1973, was racist and exclusionary. Supporters, on the other hand, claim the measure preserved Alameda’s architecture and residential heritage.
