    The Little Ice Rink in Alameda is back for another on November 8 at Alameda’s South Shore Center adjacent to Petco on the southeast side of the South Shore Center off Park Street.  The Little Ice Rink will be open from December 8, 2014 through January 19, 2015.     The Little Ice Rink is a gift to the community from Alameda’s Perforce Software Foundation and South Shore Center with the assistance of Ice-America.  South Shore Center will be having “several fun activities” along with the ice in the future.  And this year, Panera Bread will be serving coffee, hot chocolate and cookies on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.  Nothing is better than hot chocolate and ice skating.     The Little Ice Rink, with 4100 square feet of ice skating area, will not only accommodate ice skates but if yo...

  A New Approach to Undergrounding Utilities Lines in Alameda   A New Approach to Undergrounding Utilities Lines in Alameda will be discussed at a Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, November 6, from 6:30 to 7:30 at the Alameda Free Library at 1550  Oak Street in Alameda.     In 1984 the City of Alameda initiated a program to underground overhead utilities in order to beautify the City.  Utility Underground Districts(UUDs) were created through through a City Ordinance to accomplish that goal. Funding was designed so that all customers, through a 2% component of Alameda Municipal Power’s electric revenue to pay for undergrounding of overhead utility facilities, pole removals and street light conversion. Alameda Real Estate Market Report, Third Quarter 2014   Alameda, like most cities in the Bay Area, has seen prices increase and inventory decrease.  The days of the market decline are gone and hopefully will not return soon.  Although you must remember that real estate like the stock market is cyclical.  Prices will eventually go down.   Sellers have everything going for them now, if they decide to sell their homes.  Rates are still low at around 4+%.  There are many, many buyers who want to buy a home in Alameda because of the good schools, lovely neighborhoods, beach and parks and the slower-paced lifestyle.         In 2008 when the real estate market was in the doldrums, the number of homes that sold for $800,000+ was about 17% of the market.  That number continued to decrease in 200...

Mariel Thomas Retires from Mastick Senior Center   Mariel Thomas retires from Mastick Senior Center after many years of service.  She has been a mainstay at the Mastick for 27 years. She has been a devoted staff member of Mastick and is valued and will be miss by the large Mastick community.     Her long employment with Mastick started when she was initially hired as a part-time employee working with the Center’s then Director Georgina Jones.  When Jackie Krause assumed the responsibility as Center Director, Mariel became a full-time employee.  She became a Senior Center Specialist and second in command.   She continued her work and created programs for Mastick’s events and celebrations.  She became the Trip Director at Mastick coordinating and hosting day trips, as well as extended tri...

  Be prepared for the next big one!  September is National Preparedness Month.   We all face potential disasters.  There are tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, fires.  California periodically has huge fires, but by far our greatest worry is about earthquakes.  We have been told that there will be a 7 point or greater earthquake on the Hayward Fault in the near future.     The recent Napa earthquake on August 24, 2014 was a reminder that an earthquake could happen at any time.   Earthquakes do not give any notice that they are coming.  So we must plan to mitigate any damage or loss of life from an earthquake now.   What can we do to prepare for the next big one?   The first thing you should do is make a plan.
