In December, 2008 the California Air Resources Board passed the most sweeping emissions rule in the nation.  This new reguation starts this year. According to CARB, diesel exhaust causes cancer, and swift action must be taken in order to save thousands of lives in California.  This law is intended for all of the big rigs running around the state, but it affects all vehicles with a gross vehicle rating of over 14,500 pounds.  All full sized diesel pick ups that I'm aware of have a GVW rating of at least 19,000 lbs.  Exempted are motor homes and private utility vehicles.  Fleets have to start complying this year; individual owners have four years to comply.  This regulation also affects all out of state diesels that operate in the state. You won't find many 15 and 16 year olds willing to spend their summer without cell phones, TV, and other amenities, but 11 kids from across America did just that, traveling the country by bicycle and sleeping on thin rubber mats most nights. The group from Overland Summer Programs spent the night at the Holiday Inn Express in 29 Palms July 29, only their third night in a hotel since leaving Savannah, GA June 21.  From 29 Palms they headed to Lucerne Valley, traversed the Angeles National Foreest before making their way August 1 to Santa Monica. The Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in 29 Palms employs thousands of people a report from the base Community Impact Assessment points out.  In 2006 about 11,967 military members and civilians were employed by the base.  Using a formula devised from the Base Realignments andClosures program, the report's authors calculate 19,550 jobs are created in the wider region incirectly because of the Marine base population. Yucca Valley is about 20 miles from the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center at 29 Palms. Sometimes, though not too often, you can hear the distant rumbling of artillery or bombs exploding on the base.  A friend of mine, a retired "gunnie" told me that the base is larger then the state of Rhode Island.  The Marines are able to practice with virtually all the munitions in their arsenal on this base.A while back I was at the local car dealer looking to by a car.  The salesman had just retired from the Marines.  We were out in the lot, and here comes that distant rumble.  I looked at the salesman, and jokingly said "I see your buddies are blowing things up again."  He looked at me with a perplexed expression on his face, probably wanting to react adversely to my statement, but also not wa... 01/26/2008

Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center at 29 Palms public affairs officer, Capt. Neal Fisher has announced major construction on the base has been approved.  This includes $34.3 million for bachelor enlisted quarters and parking, $67.5 million for operations centers.  Also approved is $21.4 million for Phase III of the  Combat Arms Military Operations in Urban Terrain faculity, $13.6 million for a landfill, $4.5 million for additions to regimental headquarters, and $123 million for enlisted quarters.These construction projects are aimed at replacing aging housing, and to upgrade training facilities.  Along with the planned increase of Marines assigned to the base and their support of local business, these construction projects should benefit local contractors.  The City of 29 Palms and T... 01/06/2008

According to MarineCorps Air Ground Combat Center commanding general Brig. Gen Melvin G. Spiese, over 1700 Marines will be added to the base.  Although the base's population fluctuates daily, currently there are about 12,000 Marines and Sailors attached to the base.  This is good news for the housing market in this area!A friend of mine, a Navy Chaplin on the base, gave me some interesting statistics, and although unrelated to the topic of this blog, I find it very interesting.  The Navy has more aricraft than the Air Force.  And the Army uses more ships than the Navy.  I'll have to look these figures up sometime. 12/27/2007

Who Helped to populate Twentynine Palms? Is there a name that could be mentioned? Yes, there is. His name is Dr. James Luckie. (what a nice name. I would go to a doctor named Dr Luckie) He is credited by the 29 Palms community with helping to bring numerous amounts of people there. These People are Soldiers who fought for our country during WWI.  They were individuals who suffered from exposure to what we call Mustard Gas. The affects of that chemical warfare agent would create blisters, and it has  mutagenic and carinogenic effects as well.  Inhaled in large amounts it can cause bleeding and other issues in the lungs. Have you Taken a drive out to Twentynine Palms lately? I have. What a surprise. In Victorville were I work we have the remains of the old, closed George air-force base. Yesterday I drove by the military housing. True is has not been maintained for 16 years.
