If your house is being shown to potential buyers, be careful with your valuables, police and real estate brokers now advise. (CBC) The Fraser Valley Real Estate Board is warning agents to be on the lookout for thieves who target open houses, following a string of thefts in the Langley area in the past month. Laptop computers, designer purses and even medications kept in bathroom cabinets have been stolen from real estate open houses and private showings. Some veterans of the business said they've never encountered this kind of crime before now. "I've been in real estate … for 26 years," said Deanna Horn, president of the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board. Rising interest rates and falling demand are cooling B.C.'s residential real estate market. (CBC) Higher home prices in B.C., coupled with rising interest rates, have taken the edge off the province's housing market, but prices are still rising. Figures released by the B.C. Real Estate Association on Friday show 8,385 properties changed hands in April, a four per cent decline, compared to the month before. Association chief economist Cameron Muir said higher home prices, particularly in Vancouver, the Fraser Valley and Victoria, as well as recent mortgage interest rate hikes have cut overall housing demand. The average home price for sales jumped 17 per cent to $507,616 in the first four months of 2010 as a total of 26,669 residential properties were sold. When compared to April, 2009,...

Summerland ~ A Brief History "There no cloud shall dim the sky, in that happy home on high, In that heavenly Summer Land, in that heavenly Summer Land." This is an excerpt from a spiritualist hymn that was sung at séances. It inspired town promoter J.M. Robinson to name the community Summerland in his efforts to entice the early settlers.
