Remember the movie Rambo - First Blood? If so, you might recognize Hope as the setting for this muscle-bound Hollywood smash. Last year, Hope celebrated the 25th anniversary of Rambo's 1982 release on the Big Screen! Hard to believe it was that long ago! In the fall of 1981 the District of Hope, B.C. was transformed by Hollywood - and became known as the 'big screen birthplace' of John Rambo!                                          For six weeks - the filming of First Blood created a time of starwatching on the streets!   A crew of aproximately up somewhere around 100 people moved in and created a set that included "the Sheriff's Office" on the lawn of the District Hall.  They also constructed  a false  front for the local gas station and built the gun shop on the street across from t...

Nestled at the base of the Cascade Mountains, the pretty little town of Hope sits on a wide sweeping curve of the mighty Fraser River, guarding the entrance to the Fraser River Canyon. Everytime I drive to and from Hope, I am in sheer awe of the Majesty of these Mountains...and the Rush of the Fraser River.. When gold was discovered, Hope, like many of the settlements in this region, suddenly became a bustling waypoint for traders and prospectors, bringing pioneers from all over the globe. Now this small community with a population of less then 7,000 is a popular tourist spot, and a half way point between Vancouver and the Okanagan.  These days, the local joke here is no matter which way you're going, the rest of BC is beyond Hope.   Need Need a break from driving? Park your car across ...

Just past Hope's only set of traffic lights and adjacent to Memorial Park - there a Beautiful little Japanese Friendship Garden.  Built in the summer of 1991, the garden was dedicated to all the Japanese-Canadians who had to remain in internment camps during the Second World War.  Probably the most famous camp in this area was Tashme......located just 14 miles east of Hope.  Looking much like they did 50 years ago, the barns they lived in are now part of the Sunshine Valley community. The bright red roof makes it pretty easy to see from Highway 3. When I lived in Sunshine Valley - I was saddened to hear the stories about Tashme.  My daughter Sarah had a teacher, in Hope who was interned there as a child. To think that my kids were playing in a recreation centre that once housed hundreds...

Now thats unique isn't it?  If you're taking a walk-about Hope it won't be long before you notice, that just about every street corner has a Chainsaw Carving Showcased.  When Hope's chainsaw carver, Pete Ryan first came to Hope from Toronto, he became fascinated with 'carving with technology' instead of chisels'...                                                              Downtown Hope, B.C. Ryan had always been a hobby 'carver'.....but here he started honing his new skills by carving wood, moose antlers, soapstone......ice....anything hecould get his hands on - with a chainsaw!      Ryan's first major project was a huge water buffalo and elephant that he carved for Expo '86 for the Transportation Exhibit in the  Yukon Pavillion. In the early 1990's Hope was sturggling with the fact ...

Set in the THE COQUIHALLA CANYON PROVINCIAL PARK  minutes from the town of Hope  are what could be one of B.C.'s best kept seccrets. Here I've lived in Chilliwack and the Fraser Valley for the past eight years and NEVER I mean never have I seen the Othello Tunnels  - a series of abandoned railway tunnels and bridges that will take your breath away!   As you take the windy logging rode up to the Park a large parking lot awaits you (pay parking)...From there its a 10 minutes walk along a beautifully treed gravel path.....leaves starting to turn into their autumn wonder....by your side is the babbling rush of the Coquihalla River...It's an exhilerating walk.....knowing that soon...around the corner you'll face your first tunnel.... The hike is pretty easy.  There's a bit of an uphill climb...

The Hope Slide was one of the largest landslides ever recorded in Canada. Early in the dark morning of January 9, 1965, a small snowslide forced four people to stop their vehicles a few miles southeast of the town of Hope, B.C. (two hours east of Vancouver), on a stretch of the Hope-Princeton Highway below Johnson Peak.  As those people contemplated waiting for clearing crews or turning around, a small earthquake below the mountain triggered the main slide, which obliterated the mountain's southwestern slope.       The slide buried the victims and their vehicles under a tonne of rock, mud, and debris 85 m thick and 3 km wide, which came down the 2000-metre mountainside . This mass of debris completely displaced the lake below with incredible force, throwing it against the opposite side ...

Less then 2 hours east of Vancouver, nestled between the  Cascade and Coastal mountains of Hope - lie the pristine blue waters of Kawkawa Lake. Scattered around the shores of Kawkawa is a small community of lakefront cottages.........offering one of the last frontiers for affordable waterfront properties .... This Day-Trippers haven offers so many activities include water skiing, tubing, swimming......a maze of wilderness hiking trails and you can even drop a line and fish for Kokanee (which can be 3.5 lbs and bigger!      The word Kawkawa is a poetic Native term that means 'much calling of loons.' Repeat it often enough and you'll get the picture. Much of the shoreline is still wooded and free of development.  Although during the summer months, especially the weekends, Kawkawa receives...

A long time ago when I was going through a stressful time, a friend of mine gave me the keys to her getaway cabin............two days of weekend heaven,  in what was then for me the unheard of Sunshine Valley!  A sign marks the Valley as your heading from Hope (SV is located 19 km East of Hope) down the Hope Princeton Highway (or Crowsnest Hwy).......but for most of us it was a tiny blip on our radar and we drove right past it towards Manning Park Ski Resort or beyond.                                         Well I would like to say that weekend was fantastic........but despite the adorable cottage and pristine HEIDI like Alpine village setting....I was as sick as a dog the whole weekend, and for the most part didn't leave the bathroom...:-( Fortunately I was allowed repeat visits.....a...
