Round and Round and Round We Go The roundabout has hit Tucson, er…Oro Valley.  On July 19, 2010, a traffic roundabout was opened at the intersection of Hardy Road and Northern Avenue.  It is the first for the town. View Larger Map I’ve lived in the Tucson area for 10 years now, and I’d say the biggest challenge to the town is the vast array of driving skill sets the town presents.  Most of the people I’ve met in Tucson, are not “from” Tucson.  Many are from California, New York, and again, just as many from the Midwest.  What does this mean?  Well, for one,  I’ve seen more people in 15 minutes between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. on a “quiet” road in Tucson, than on a 30 mile trip from Green Bay to Luxemburg on any given day.  There is no comparing rural driving to the 10 lanes of a LA expressway ...

A-Frame signs are illegal in the town of Oro Valley, AZ. That's a problem for businesses struggling to survive in these tough economic times, and so the town council met last Wednesday night to discuss the possibility of temporary relief from the Sign Code for Oro Valley businesses. Oro Valley deems these signs unsightly. Bonnie Quinn, owner of Down Home Delights on Oracle Road, carried that sign you see on the right to the meeting and set it up for the council to see as she addressed them: I opened my cafe and bakery, Down Home Delights, in 2007.  Like other businesses, [Down Home Delights] has taken a huge hit from the economy.  I am in a small strip mall, set back from the road behind a hill, with horrible visibility from the road.  The most effective form of identification for me i...

Tax Breaks for Military Families: Homeowner breaks. Service members serving outside the U.S. for at least 90 days between December 31, 2008, and May 1, 2010, have an extra year to qualify for the $8,000 first-time home-buyer credit or the $6,500 credit for current homeowners. They have until April 30, 2011, to sign a contract and until June 30, 2011, to close on the new house. Normally, if homeowners don't live in the new house for at least three years, they have to repay the tax credit. But there's an exception for members of the military who have to relocate because of government orders. Military families also get a special break when they sell their homes. Most homeowners need to live in a house for at least two of the five years leading up to the sale in order to claim tax-free pro...

(V.I.P. Mortgage )
You know the story.  You're at a party or a networking event and someone says to you "So what do you do?" For the last couple of years when I answer that question with "I'm a mortgage loan officer" I can see the person look a little funny and say "ohhhh - It must be tough for you right now".  Or, "ohhh - you're one of those".   So I started really thinking about what is it that I do for a living.  The true answer is "I solve puzzles and problems".  Yep!  That's what I really do.  Every client who comes to me has a situation that is a unique puzzle.  Most clients today, have a problem or two that needs to be solved.  Over the last 30 years I have learned to be a puzzle master and a problem wizard.    It's never boring, that's for sure!  The "puzzles" always have a new twist (because ever...

Honeybee Canyon, Oro Valley, AZ.  Honeybees are alive and well in the wilds (and not-so-wild parts) of the Sonoran Desert.  It's rare to find honeycomb in the desert, as rare for me today as it was for the ancient Amerindians whose petroglyphs adorn this waterway in our beautiful desert. Honeybees have been creating their spectacular works of edible art since the beginning of time. Those of you from agricultural areas will recognize the vertical combs in the photo above, but you're used to seeing them on  wooden frames, hung inside wooden boxes, tended by keepers covered from head to toe in protective gear. What surprised me about this particular honeybee colony is it's proximity to one of the most developed new areas in Tucson's northwest corridor.  The bridge crosses the arroyo in th...
