Am I seeing things, or are we starting to see some new construction in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. It has been a long time since we have seen the signs of new construction in our little desert oasis, but believe me we are in need of some positive signs in this beautiful lake town. I remember when I moved to Lake Havasu in 1992 and there was very little construction, then we went on a construction boom, everywhere you looked there was a new home being built. We had so many contractors in town. Today we are starting to see a small movement of new homes being built again, WHY? I believe the answer to that question can be answered by looking at the available properties on the market currently, and the price drop in the vacant lots available. New home construction prices have leveled to a poi...

Lake Havasu City businesses have won approval for popular vertical signs.  Now, business owners are breaking out their vertical signs and rejoicing in the success of increased business.  In this time of recession, businesses need all the help they can get to continue to flourish.  One business owner has seen a 13% increase in sales since putting up the sign.  However, the signs are going to cost the business owners a pretty penny for the permit, which could either make them or break them. A vertical sign allows for the banner to be placed on a stand instead of hanging it. Guidelines have been set by the Lake Havasu City Counsel, who made the decision to allow vertical signs.  Businesses have been allowed to re-post their vertical banner or teardrop signs all over Lake Havasu City.  They...

To help a veteran, you don’t have to be a veteran, and Lake Havasu City veterans need help from the community.  Chapter 27 of the local Disabled American Veterans  is looking for help to drive members back and forth safely from Lake Havasu City to Phoenix or Prescott.  Dozens of DAV members in Lake Havasu City without transportation would get much needed medical attention for their care.  Currently, there are no Veterans Affairs hospitals in the city or county. Driver shifts usually last about 12 hours for the over 400 mile round trip.  Most believe it is more than worth it.  A professional driver for over 30 years said, “It’s perfect for anyone who enjoys getting on the road or doing something worthwhile.  It’s an opportunity to feel accomplished because you’re able to give something ...

Teen break has gotten off to a great start in Lake Havasu City as teens swarmed Rotary Park last Tuesday for the first day of Teen Break.  This is an annual event that high school kids say is relaxing and a lot of fun for everyone.  Organizers from the city’s Parks and Recreation Department say that over 1,500 students have registered for the annual three-day event.  And there’s an estimated 100+ volunteers who will distribute free food and monitor events and rides. Many students have said that this year's event is even better than last year.  There’s a second, larger music stage, several different carnival rides and an Army obstacle course to enjoy.  Many students and volunteers agree that, if you have the right people and attitude, you can have fun no matter what. The school board at Lake Havasu Unified School District is scheduled to meet at 6pm on Tuesday, March 15 in the boardroom of Building C, 220 Havasupai Blvd to discuss possible changes in the gifted programs.  The schools' gifted teachers will be giving a presentation to the board at the beginning of the meeting.  Any changes to the program will be at a later date.  The program could be scaled back in the second of three rounds of budget cuts.  The district has to cut $1.7 million for the 2011-2012 year after local Lake Havasu voters failed to renew a property tax in the 2010 election. There will also be a public hearing on possibly changing the dating abuse health curriculum.  However, the director of special services and business planning hasn’t returned an answer on a request for an ...

There is a work of art in progress in Lake Havasu City, as members of the Havasu Art Guild and local Havasu schoolteachers start installing the mosaic artwork at Rotary Park.  Lake Havasu’s middle school and fifth grade students have been creating the tiles since the beginning of the school year. The Havasu Art Guild funded the project.  The theme is “Where Earth Meets Water.”  And, it will line the wall near the playground next to Ramada B. This year, the Lake Havasu Community Center will host the 32nd Annual Spring Art Show.  It is the largest and most attended show throughout the valley.  Artists have submitted their works from around the country and the show will be open to members and non-members. Lake Havasu City’s Nautical Beachfront Resort hired a new management group for their multi-million dollar project.  The resort is hoping the new management company will make a huge difference in its latest project. Monday, it was announced that a national hotel management company has been retained as the final piece in an upgrade project at the resort.  A zoning change was approved by the City Council in January that zones 28.4 acres as a resort related project.  The project will include up to 188 extended stay units. The new management group will hopefully bring the missing ingredient: resources that will extend beyond the borders and increase tourism at the resort. A new pool and check-in building are a part of this project, as well. The project is well into the first stage of the re...

The amazing 1965 Amphicar was built to travel roads and navigate waterways.  You can see this amazing big boy toy on display at the Big Boy Toys event in Lake Havasu City in the Uptown District of McCulloch Boulevard.  This featured vehicle is owned by Dean Baker and is German built.  The broker searched for two years before finding the car of his dreams in Seattle.  This is the perfect vehicle for Dean Baker to show condos from the water or take clients for a ride on the Lake.  Registering the vehicle with the state requires you to register as a classic car and a watercraft.  To move from land to water, it requires you to remove the seatbelts, switch a lock type device to seal the doors from water, insert a bilge plug to make the vehicle seaworthy, and shift the floor board levers to ...

There is only a little bit of time left to take advantage of the Lake Havasu City Water Conservation Rebate Program.  Since the program began, almost $54,000 has been rewarded to participants in the form of rebate checks.  However, that means that only around $6000 is left in the fund.  This is expected to be used up within the next couple of weeks.  The Lake Havasu City Water Conservation Rebate Program is funding set aside to help Havasu homeowners pay for purchasing low water flow toilets, energy saving swimming pool covers and hot water recirculation pumps for all purchases made between September 1, 2010 and March 31, 2011 or until funds are depleted.  As I said before, there is only about 2 or 3 weeks left in funding and that doesn't include those people who are currently installin...

There are three Santa Clauses in Lake Havasu City, each with a different protocol of the legendary Christmas icon.  One insists on not overshadowing the true meaning of Christmas.  One wears the red and white suit to help needy animal shelter pets get veterinarian services to make them more adoptable.  And, yet another says he IS Santa.  As a modern day Santa, you have to be up on the times.  You have to be careful with the requests in this day and age.  Children want to bring home a parent from military service for Christmas or bring back a deceased family member or other similar requests.  You have to be proactive to request and handle them accordingly.  These Santas receive visits from individuals of all ages.  Older children want to know why there are so many Santas.  Many people t...
