Carrie Shortridge was born in Lafayette, Indiana back in 1849 to Elias and Telitha. During the Civil War the family moved to Mount Pleasant, Iowa. At 15 she eloped to marry Jeremiah. The family moved several times settling in San Jose, California around 1872. Her husband left her and their 5 kids around 1876.A mother of 5 and no income she began to study law in the office of a local judge. To support herself she began giving lectures starting in 1887. She wanted to take the bar exam but was prohibited by State law. She filed a bill to change the wording from “white male” to person, that bill passed and in 1878 she passed the bar exam.
