James Smith McDonnell was born in Denver, Colorado back in 1899. He was raised in Little Rock, Arkansas graduating from Little Rock High School in 1917. He continued his education at Princeton University graduating in 1921, with a Master’s of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from MIT in 1925.After graduation, he started working for Stout Metal Airplane Division of the Ford Motor Company. in 1931, he was hired as an engineer for the Glenn L. Martin Company resigning in 1938. He later served as chairman of the United Nations Association of the United States. In 1980, he was awarded the NAS Award in Aeronautical Engineering for the National Academy of Sciences.
