Karl Theodor Christian Friedrich Follen was born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany back in 1769 to Christoph and Rosine. He was educated in Giessen where he showed a proficiency in Greek, Latin, Hebrew, French and Italian. He continued his education at the University of Giessen studying theology.In 1818, he returned to Giessen to study law where he was awarded a doctorate in civil and ecclesiastical law. In 1820, he moved to Switzerland where he taught Latin and history. In 1824, he moved to the United States arriving in New York City. In 1825, he was working as an instructor in German for Harvard University.
