Desmond Thomas Doss was born in Lynchburg, Virginia back in 1919 to William and Bertha. He enlisted in the military back in 1942 however, he was a conscientious objector and refused to kill an enemy or carry a weapon. He became a medic serving in the Pacific theatre of World War II.He was wounded three times during the war, shortly before being discharged he was diagnosed with tuberculosis that cost him a lung. He died in Piedmont, Alabama in 2006 at 87 and is buried in Chattanooga, Tennessee’s National Cemetery.So you may be asking yourself why I chose to write about Desmond today. Eleanore Cammack was born in Los Angeles, California back in 1934 to Winfred and Eleanore. She graduated from USC with a bachelor’s degree in communication in 1956. She worked as a production assistant on “Climax!” with CBS-TV. In 1980 she moved to Northern California where she had a long public-relations career that included working for the Mendocino Coast Chamber of Commerce. She made a guest appearance on the TV show To Tell the Truth. All in all, she spent 40 years as a marketing coordinator for the Fort Bragg-Mendocion Chamber of Commerce. However, it was what she did when she was 5 that will forever be written in the history books. George Mifflin was born in Philadelphia back in 1792 to Alexander and Arabella.  He was educated privately at a Quaker-run preparatory school.  He studied at the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) graduating with highest honors in 1810.  He was admitted to the bar in 1813.George did not have a great enthusiasm for the legal practice wanting to fight tin the War of 1812.  That plan failed due to his father’s objections.  He accepted an offer to be the private secretary of Albert Gallatin travelling to Russia with Gallatin to try and secure a peace negotiation between Great Britain and the United States.  After only 6 months in Russia he was sent to London to determine if the War of 1812 could be resolved diplomatically.  Arriving in Washington. Dagmar Mohne Hansen Lahlum was born in Eidsvoll, Norway back in 1922, the family moved to Oslo when she was 17, she worked as a receptionist in the city center hotel later taking modeling classes.She met British double agent Eddie Chapman who was drinking with German officers in the Ritz Bar. This bar was also a popular plat for member of the Norwegian national socialist party. She was dressed in a décolletage with high heels smoking a cigarette with an ivory mouthpiece. Anyway he approached her thinking she was a prostitute of another good time girl. Shortly afterwards they lived together later becoming his fiancée. Augustine was born in London, England back in 1710. His father and grandfather were both upholsterers, both of them became officials of the City Company of Upholsterers. His grandfather fell upon hard times and died in debtors’ prison. His father saved up enough money to have him educated at Eton College.However, his true love was music. He was so into it he smuggled a spinet into his room, damping the sounds with his handkerchief he would practice during the night while the rest of the family slept. Merritt was born in Boston Massachusetts back in 1857 to John and Mary. At the age of 16 she suffered a paralytic stroke while attending Medford High School. Of course that ended her formal education. For several years she remained under her parents’ care at their home.At the age of 30 she could walk however, there was a substantial limp that never left her. She enrolled in Boston Cooking School and as they say the rest is history. She trained at the school unit 1889, she was considered one of the school’s top student. After graduation she was asked to stay on as assistant to the director in 1891.In 1896 she wrote her first cookbook. Jane Nettie Harmon was born in Griffin, Georgia back in 1907. Her family ancestry was interesting it was a mix of African and Cherokee. She attended Episcopal schools and went west no to Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. She graduated in 1929 as a registered nurse.After graduation she left Georgia and settled in Chicago, Illinois working at Wilson Hospital. She married Evans however the marriage fell apart after two years. She continued working as a nurse but this time for practicing doctors while attending Loyola University. From 1941-51 she was a health inspector for an insurance company.Om 1953 she married again to Sumner. Both of them managed nursing homes for the elderly in Chicago until their retirement in 1972. Robert Erskine was born in Scotland back in 1735. He attended the University of Edinburgh. He invented the Continual Steam Pump and Platometer which was a centrifugal hydraulic engine. He became known as an inventor and engineer gaining renown in Scotland. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society at the tender age of 36.In 1771 he was hired by some ironworkers to run a plant near Ringwood, New Jersey. Shortly after he arrived in the colonies the American Revolutionary War started. Ira Aten was born in Cairo, Illinois back in 1862. His father was a Methodist circuit rider and moved the family to Texas in 1876, settling near Round Rock. As a youngster in 1878 while only 2 years old he witnessed the death of outlaw Sam Bass. At the age of 20 he joined the Texas Rangers assigned to Company D, serving under Captain L.P. Seiker.He was involved in the Fence Cutting War of the mid-1880’s. the Hall of fame member John Hughes and Ira was in pursuit of murderer Judd Roberts which involved a gunfight they killed Judd in that fight. Late in the Fence Cutting War Ira placed sticks of dynamite was placed on some fences set to explode anyone who cut the fence. He earned a degree in mathematics from Wesleyan University and a graduate degree in engineering from the University of Illinois. John Andree was born in London, England back in 1740. By 1766 he was a lecturer on anatomy in London, and a surgeon to the Magdalen Hospital. By 1780 he was a candidate for the surgeoncy to the London Hospital however he was defeated by William Blizard.In 1781 he was the surgeon to the Finsbury Dispensary. In 1798 he took the degree of M.D. however is does not appear in what university he received the degree from. He practiced several years in Hertford returning to London. The time frame he returned to London is not documented anywhere that I can find. Frank Taylor was born in New Milford, Connecticut back in 1863. He attended Claverack College in Hudson, New York followed by Franklin Institute and the Drexel Institute. He found employment with Electro-Dynamics Corporation, beginning his lifelong work.   What was his lifelong work you may ask? Daniel Beard was born in Suffern, New York back in 1850 to James and Mary. I don’t have much to offer you for his early education. However, what I can tell you is he started out early in his career as an engineer and surveyor. He did attend school in New York City and wrote some articles for St. Nicolas Magazine, which served the basis for The American Boy’s Handy Book. He also illustrated a number of books for Mark Twain and Ernest Crosby.Later he became the editor of the Recreation magazine and wrote a monthly column for the youth. Julia Beckwith was born near Peach Orchard, Virginia back in 1798 to Thomas and Margaret.  The family moved to Parkersburg on the Ohio River.  Julia was an intelligent child however; her life was full of tragedies.   In 1817 she married Jonathan and they moved to Clarksburg.  The young family had three children Thomas, Elizabeth and Laura. David Hall was born in Westfield, Scotland back in 1714. He apprenticed starting in 1729 for five years to a printing firm in Scotland. In 1743 his friend William Strahan sent a letter to the American colonies inquiring if anyone was in need of a journeyman printer. The letter was read by a prominent American publisher who at the time was looking for a journeyman printer. Thus begins the rest of the story.This publisher offered David employment for one year if he was good enough. David arrived in America in 1744.
