Townsend Foster was born in Anna, Illinois back in 1886 to Zachary and Ruth. He attended the University of Illinois where in 1907 he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree. In 1909, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Coast Artillery Corps.He served with General John J. Pershing on the Mexican Border. By then he was assigned to the aviation corps where he set records for endurance flying.
