Katy Thorson - Staff Writer | 0 comments The Sigma Lambda chapter of Kappa Delta at Auburn University will host the 22nd annual Shamrock 5K Run to raise funds and awareness for the prevention of child abuse on Saturday, Feb. 28. The race will begin promptly at 8 a.m. at Willow Hall in The Village dorms on Auburn’s campus, and it will finish on West Thach Avenue, across from the FarmHouse fraternity house. The Sigma Lambda chapter had a speaker from Prevent Child Abuse America’s Montgomery location talk to them last semester, raising its awareness on the subject.  “This one girl who was 15 years old had been raped by a family member, and I didn’t realize until that point that for a lot of people who get abused, it’s by a brother or close family member,” said Anna Abernathy, vice presiden...

Katherine Haas | Opelika-Auburn News Auburn’s Technology Park West is growing to make room for new industry. The City of Auburn recently annexed 78.35 acres south of Beehive Road , across from West Tech Lane , for the expansion of Technology Park West, which encompasses approximately 449 acres and is home to eight tenants.   According to Megan McGowen, deputy economic development director for the City of Auburn , the city plans to acquire more industrial property every few years to make room for new infrastructure. “The amount of acreage available for projects is getting lower, so it’s time to add more property,” McGowen said. Though the expansion will provide space for new tenants, the city does not have any new industries or project locations for the technology park to announce just n...

Katy Thorson - Staff Writer | 0 comments Come Saturday, March 7, Kiesel Park will be crawling with a happy bunch of hay-, slime- and mud-covered kids when the Junior League of Lee County (JLLC) hosts its 2nd annual Junior Adventure Challenge (JAC). Children ages 4 to10 are welcome to run the obstacle course, which will precede a celebration party in which T-shirts and medals will be handed out.  “There are so many races and things for adults,” said Lori King, JLLC committee member. “This is geared towards smaller kids. They’ll get out there, be active and have a lot of fun.” The event will feature three new obstacles — the wood wall, rock wall and human car wash. “It (human car wash) is made out of PVC pipe, and the kids are going to get to ride a tricycle through it, and it’ll have wat...

Brian Woodham brian@auburnvillager.com In response to the City Council's unanimous approval of a six-month moratorium on new multi-unit housing development in the University Service District east of College Street, city of Auburn staff have begun the process of acting on the council's recommendations.  The recommendations include reviewing whether the University Service (US) zone should be amended; updating the March 2013 Danter study that provided a market-rate apartment analysis for the city; exploring potential regulatory and financial incentives to encourage redevelopment of existing older apartment complexes; and adopting the Downtown Master Plan.  The process of updating the Danter study has already begun and should be completed at some point in April.  At the end of the six-month...

Katy Thorson – katy@auburnvillager.com When area seniors feel uncomfortable completing certain tasks at home, yet also uncomfortable living in a nursing or assisted living home, they may feel there is no middle ground. A local nonprofit, Village Friends Village Values (VFVV) is stepping in to be a safe haven for seniors over the age of 60 who want to, as VFVV calls it, “age in place.”  With this idea in mind, VFVV, which was established locally about a year ago, provides services, from transportation, grocery shopping and home maintenance to dog walking, yard care, housekeeping and much more. Therefore, seniors are given independence to live alone, but with a network of volunteers on which to rely. VFVV took inspiration from the “village” concept, which centers on the idea of different ...

Image: Liz Foreman for HouseLogic Owning a home can pay off at tax time.  Take advantage of these homeownership-related tax deductions and strategies to lower your tax bill: Mortgage Interest Deduction One of the neatest deductions itemizing homeowners can take advantage of is the mortgage interest deduction, which you claim on Schedule A. To get the mortgage interest deduction, your mortgage must be secured by your home — and your home can be a house, trailer, or boat, as long as you can sleep in it, cook in it, and it has a toilet.Interest you pay on a mortgage of up to $1 million — or $500,000 if you’re married filing separately — is deductible when you use the loan ...

Katherine Haas | Opelika-Auburn News The Auburn City Council will vote at its regular meeting Tuesday night on whether to impose a six-month moratorium on the construction of apartments and condominiums in a portion of the city east of College Street. Ward 6 council member Dick Phelan voted to deny unanimous consent at the council’s Feb. 3 meeting, postponing the vote until the council’s second meeting of the month.   Should it be approved, the moratorium would affect the city’s University Service zone, which, along with the Urban Core zone, within walking distance of the Auburn University campus. University Service permits the highest density of any zone in the city next to Urban Core. At a town hall meeting in November, Auburn Mayor Bill Ham posed the idea that a moratorium on the fur...

By Connor Sheets | csheets@al.com  Alabama has a strong tradition of protecting property rights against incursions by government, but the usurping power of eminent domain has long played a key role in the statewide march toward development and progress. The legal power of eminent domain, by which a government or agency acquires privately-owned real estate in order to facilitate development deemed to be in service of the public good, has cleared the way for everything from highways to courthouses across Alabama, and it continues to do so to this day. But eminent domain and its place in society have undergone a fundamental reassessment in the wake of the 2005 U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Kelo v. City of New London. The case pitted New London homeowner Suzette Kelo against the Connect...

Associated Press | WASHINGTON (AP) — Average long-term U.S. mortgage rates fell this week, resuming their downward trend of this year after rising slightly last week. Rates are near historically low levels. Mortgage company Freddie Mac said Thursday that the nationwide average for a 30-year mortgage declined to 3.59 percent from 3.66 percent last week. The average rate is at its lowest level since May 2013. The rate for the 15-year loan, a popular choice for people who are refinancing, eased to 2.92 percent from 2.98 percent last week. A year ago, the average 30-year mortgage stood at 4.23 percent and the 15-year mortgage at 3.33 percent. Mortgage rates have remained low even though the Federal Reserve in October ended its monthly bond purchases, which were meant to hold down long-term ...
