Posted: Thursday, April 9, 2015 9:02 amAllison Blankenship allison@auburnvillager.com @ac_blankenship on Twitter | 0 comments The City of Auburn is moving forward on creating an Auburn 2040 plan to align the community’s visions with the continued growth of the city. The latest long-term strategic plan, Auburn 2020, was adopted by the Auburn City Council in 1998, and Mayor Bill Ham Jr., who first brought up the idea of a 2040 plan almost two years ago, said the timing is right to update the city’s goals.   And after a six-month multi-unity housing moratorium for the University Service zone was approved by the City Council in mid-February, it was clearer than ever that a framework needed to be established for Auburn’s future. “I think that (the moratorium) might have exacerbated it some, ...

Thought this was so interesting. Posted: Thursday, April 2, 2015 9:22 am | Updated: 9:33 am, Thu Apr 2, 2015. Brian Woodham brian@auburnvillager.com@btwoodham on Twitter | 0 comments Fourth in a series exploring zoning within the city Last week, we explored the different types of zoning districts in Auburn. This week, we'll examine Planned Development Districts.  A Planned Development District (PDD) is an overlay, where, essentially, the master development plan submitted by a developer becomes the zone once it makes it through the approval process.  The primary benefit for developer and resident alike is certainty. The developer finds it in vested use rights, which are locked in once the plan goes through the approval process.  For example, an approved plan might call for 220 units of m...

Lindy Oller/Opelika-Auburn News Spring is in the air and Easter is just around the corner as Auburn and Opelika prepare for their citywide Easter events. Auburn is celebrating its 34 th annual Easter egg hunt Saturday at 10 a.m. in Kiesel Park.   There will be more than 35,000 eggs spread out across a four-acre area. “We’re doing things a little bit differently this year. In the past, all of the children hunted in their age groups at the same time,” said Alison Hall, community and special programs director for Auburn Parks and Recreation. “This year, we are breaking the groups up. Children 3 and under will hunt at 10:30 a.m.; children 4 to 6 will hunt at 10:45 a.m.; children 7 to 9 will hunt at 11 a.m.; and children ages 10-12 will hunt at 11:15 a.m.” The change was a result of feedback...

Thought this was an excellent article on zoning in the City of Auburn, AL. Brian Woodham brian@auburnvillager.com@btwoodham on Twitter | 0 comments Third in a series exploring zoning within the city In the third part of the series exploring zoning with the city of Auburn, we'll take a close look at the types of zoning districts, where they're located, and what's permitted or conditional in each zone.  With Auburn still predominately a residential city, neighborhood zones are the most prolific type of zone in the city.  The older, established traditional neighborhoods in town are zoned as Neighborhood Conservation District (NC).  NC is the most restrictive zone in town, and no commercial or entertainment uses are permitted there. Besides new single-family residential, the zone permits re...

Allison Blankenship allison@auburnvillager.com@ac_blankenship on Twitter | 0 comments Plans to expand certain amenities within Chewacla State Park are on the horizon as the park adjusts to recent entrance and service fee changes and prepares to switch over to a more modern campground and cabin reservation system. Essentially, there's a lot going on at Chewacla. The state park, which offers features like hiking trails, a geocaching course and new mountain bike trails, increased its entrance fees by $1 at the beginning of March. The increase, which was implemented in all Alabama state parks, was in response to rising park costs, such as increased health insurance rates for employees and increased utility costs, for example. Fees did not increase for children or seniors. While these increa...

Think we all have moments that enable us to relate to good ole Charlie Brown. Sometimes all the odds seem stacked against us and we don't know if we can take another step forward.  Thought this would be a good message for us during those tough times.  Never give up even when the going gets rough and you feel like you can't keep up the momentum needed.  When you cross the finish line you'll be happy you kept your goal in front of you and did not give up.

Think this is great news for bikers!   Patrick Johnston | Opelika-Auburn News | Twitter Auburn Mayor Bill Ham offers high praise for Chewacla State Park’s newest attraction. On Thursday, several dozen people – including many mountain biking enthusiasts — met at the upper pavilion to celebrate the opening of a new six-mile trail. It was made possible by a Recreation Trails Program grant through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs. Ham commended ADECA. He also praised the dozens of Central Alabama Mountain Pedalers (CAMP) volunteers who helped with construction, calling it one of the “most amazing volunteer projects” he’s seen in Auburn. Once the ribbon was cut, bicyclists were eager to trek the new machine-cut trail. The MTB Project states on its website that the tra...

Katherine Haas | Opelika-Auburn News As the chill of winter retreats until next year and buds and blooms hint at warm weather to come, showcasing the signs of spring becomes a priority for area residents wanting to open their eyes to the outdoors. The annual Auburn Floral Trail, organized by the Auburn Beautification Council and the Auburn-Opelika Tourism Bureau, opened earlier this month and highlights some of the finest foliage the town has to offer. The 14-mile self-guided trail, which is broken into a 3.5-mile North trail, a 10.5-mile South trail and two optional sections, takes drivers along Auburn’s neighborhood streets to view trees, bushes, flowers and more that come alive in the spring months. “It’s a recognition for the people who have spent their time in their yards that like...
