Fred Griffin Florida Real Estate are there trees nearby? Gutters are absolutely worthless on the North side of my home as they fill up several times a year with tree debris even with "gutter guards". I have to direct the water away with a curb on the ground to protect my foundation.

Fred Griffin Florida Real Estate I have learned that there are two groups of property owners: those who love gutters and those who do not.

I am a gutter guy.

Thus, seamless, metal, & gutter guards. If you need new soffit and fascia, then do it. In New England, I find vinyl to be too difficult to clean, and since I'm no longer allowed on the ladder or roof, gutter guards are necessary to keep pine needles and leaves out. I prefer K-Style for looks.

Since we have a basement, it is important to direct the rainwater away from the foundation, AND with gutters, it's easier to collect rainwater for your gardening or water storage needs.

I don't have any gutters on my house and hate the ones on my office.  Next house will have grading to handle water and simple roof line and no gutters.

I consult with my roofing professionals - get educated on the recommended products. I am on the Board of my Association. We are in the process of starting a complete re-roof project for 288 condos.  It will involve new gutters, guards, and downspouts.  I am learning so much in the process.

The circumstances dictate the need for gutters or gutter free. Where gutters all around or only diverters are needed I prefer box style in the standard 4 inch size while have had diverters where a 6 inch box was necessary. Once again leaf guards as necessary.

If new soffits and fascia are needed is this a money pit that I should pass on? Is the roof new? I am beginning wonder if this is the right house for me.

Copper half round, biggest you can get! When you say “box” I think of the old Victorian homes, in my area, that have the “box gutters” built into the roof, but I think you mean squared corner “k-style”, ones you would see on a commercial/industrial style building, in this sense. Regardless, nothing smaller than 6”! The other details are dictated on the property/area the property is located. Seamless would be another big plus as well.

I know someone that just had gutters installed. The people that came out will determine how many gutters, downspouts & where they go. They usually make everything on site. Leaf-proof if you have lots of trees & wind issues. Vinyl seemed the way to go. On other choices, subjective. Expensive these gutters etc. are. Do it yourself? Not for the majority

I have no advice for this since I have never had to shop for gutters, and my home doesn't have them.  It doesn't rain very often here, but if I had a garden, I would want to harvest what little rainwater we get.

Where I live, leaf covers are important but they're only made for 5in gutters and I have 4in gutters, so I'm out of luck there.  I have some filters in place to protect the downspouts from getting full of leaves and needles, since they are connected to my drains.  I don't want those backing up.

Diverters are fine and very common for over doorways.  Gutters are great, I have the kind with seams and the seams need to be touched up with a sealant every few years, but overall they are as effective and far cheaper, than custom seamlesss ones.

It's not just about gutters and downspouts, consider your grading and where that water is going. After proper gutter install you need to divert it minimum 20 feet away from the foundation. If you have no gutters and even decent grading after 5-10 years sidewalls will crack. Water coming down straight down around the foundation regardless of the structure will do damage. You might not see it maybe in an exterior crack many times the interior flooring will show high moisture then people install LVP on top of these slabs and the floors buckle up with moisture/mold.

So many options! It depends on the house, price point, amount of trees/leaves, etc. Aesthetic changes need to go through HOA if there is one. We opted not to do gutter guards. We have our gutters cleaned 2xs per year. They do a decent job keeping the water away from our house.

I see houses around here with no gutters or downspouts. Diverters work in some places. Maintenance free seems to be the choice for most builders now.

Gutters should never discharge onto a shingle roof, as shown in the upper left corner of this photo. This is a the equivalent to a fire hose hitting the same spot every time it rains. This shingle will fail in a short period of time resulting in a leak into the home. Upper gutters should always discharge into lower gutters, and eventually discharge onto the ground.

I think the guttersn need to be on the down slope of the house.  This is usually the front and rear of the house.
