In college I was a regular in and out of the airport. When I worked at Mars I was in and out of that airport every six weeks or so for over five years. Don't know that I ever paid any attention. The only airport I ever found truly scary in landing was Hong Kong.

Yes  Will Hamm, I have on several occasions.  It is one of the most demanding approaches from a pilots perspective.  It has an interesting history and has been threatened to be closed several times since it originally opened.  Interesting approaches landing both north and south.  not alot of concrete since we are getting critical,  Having the White House off the North end makes an immediate turn a necessity.

It is a very busy airport. The pilots are professionals know what to do. Something went very wrong to cause the crash last night.

Never flown in.
But Ailina Nelson did at least  2-3 times / month for 11 years
as a Virgin  America inflight team leader. Never any issues.

I LOVE flying Will Hamm and have never been scared of landing or taking off. I'm sure Reagan Intl would be no different to me than Denver or any other airport.

When we lived in Leesburg, VA, we usually flew out of Dulles when we could. We have however used Reagan once or twice. I did hear yesterday that they would like to limit the traffic there but for those who commute a lot, they appreciate how quick it is to get to the Capitol.

I have not flown into Reagan at night. My husband, who is a professional airline pilot always said that Reagan is his least favorite airport to fly into: dangerous, busy and lots of helicopters hovering around.  Also, he would not agree to a last-minute runway change.

My husband flew there numerous times on business back in the day, usually at night for early meetings the next day. He told me the runway is only 7,000 feet vs. 13,000 feet which is the norm, very scary flying in.

One of four kids graduated from George Washington University, so DCA was used a lot by him over 4 years, by family flying in for graduation, visits. Have gotten into habit of flying out of Logan in Boston for direct flights to avoid DCA and other leap frog stops.

     I've been to both Dulles and Reagan several times, also BWI (my Mom lived in Baltimore).   My cousin, a retired American Airlines pilot, told me that landing at Reagan is like landing on a U.S. Navy Aircraft Carrier!

    Also Peter, when you and I had lunch at Panama City Beach several years ago, I believe you said you were retired from the USAF, and one of the major Airlines... either United or American?

I have never flown into Reagan airport day or night, and am unlikely to do so.  I feel so horrible for all of the families of those impacted by this tragedy.

I have lived in the DC metro area for almost 3 decades.  The airport is at the heart of the DC metro (Alexandria), which is why you see more lights. You will see some countryside traveling from IAD (Dulles International Airport).

Nope, all my visits to DC have been in a car or on a bus. Once even all the way there and back on a school bus.
