We have had both Fred Griffin Florida Real Estate and we found the upright far superior for our needs. That being said I am no longer a hunter and I don't need a big deep freezer to put a deer in. A chest freezer was better than a upright for taking in a big animal. Our upright is better for a lot of smaller odds and ends.

I have a standup freezer in my garage - a Montgomery WARDS freezer, so that tells you how long I have had it! I like it because I can see everything, and things don't get covered up and forgotten. Easy to see what I need before making a grocery run.

I have a chest freezer in the garage but I wish we had bought a stand up one. It is such a royal PITA to find anything, even though I've tried to organize in different containers. The thing I want is ALWAYS under everything and I've got to take it all out to find it. We might put that in our basement and put a stand up one in the garage. I truly hate trying to find stuff.

I have both. The standing is MUCH easier to access stuff and is better for inside the house. I have a chest freezer for backups and bulk buys. Stuff I don't need to access on a daily basis and stuff I'm not that likely to be needing to sort through to find the one thing on the bottom.

I've had both and hands-down, the upright will forever be my choice! I can't tell you how many frozen foods that were thrown out of the chest freezer because it got lost in the bottom of the freezer. It's impossible to find anything in there unless it's right on top too!
LOVE my upright and will never go back - even if they tell me my upright is ½ as energy efficient as a chest freezer!!

We had a chest freezer and now we have an upright freezer. We have found it's easier to see food in the upright freezer however the chest held a lot more food. Space wise the upright freezer is better. My wife would go back to a chest freezer in a heartbeat.

I have had both and the upright allows more access for everyone. My wife has short arms and can't reach the bottom stuff without falling in. That was not a pretty sight. and don't have either right now. I shop like a european, daily for stuff I cook that night. come on over when you are this side of town

Fred, we have one large upright and multiple smaller chests (we tend to buy a half cow and a full hog every so often). As Kat mentioned, finding something in the chests can be a real PITA, even when you know which chest it's stored in (and yes, I'm a bit organized and have some tape labels on top of a couple of the chest style so I know what is where, but Liz mostly tells me to get X, and I go get it). And if you have any vertically challenged people in your home, getting to the bottom of a chest freezer can be an issue, and compounded by how much may need to be moved out of the freezer to dig to the bottom.
The upright is easier to find stuff, BUT you also lose some capacity depending on what you are storing because of spacing between shelves. The other pro is the upright takes up less floor space in the garage.
I think between the two styles, Liz would favor the upright, and I just favor anything that keeps stuff frozen :)

I like a stand-alone combo unit with more space the better freezer PLUS a standard frig with side by side or below. One in the garage and one in the kitchen (traditional). Consider that until supply lines & chains boost confidence, having extra/back-up frig-freezer makes sense not to mention always having something to choose from to eat & buying sale items. As to the upright or the chest, I have seen both in garages, at work.

I like my upright freezer --- no bending over digging around in cold air to find something. For that same reason, I prefer a side-by-side refrigerator over the French-style (Q: do the French even have those?)

I have a full-sized stand-up freezer. I just replaced the 45-year-old stand-up freezer I had. It is easier to keep organized than a chest freezer and fits in a space in the corner of my laundry room.

Good morning, Fred. I own an upright like the one you have pictured in my garage... I've had it for some 25 years and I bought because I paid $100 for it way back when... but it's been doing its job for me ever since. I must admit, I do like being able to store stuff on top of it, which is harder with a chest style.
I had a side by side in my kitchen and when it died I replace it with a French door fridge, which provides more of a chest freezer capacity. I prefer my old side by side... it was easier keeping things organized.
Of course, if you have to put a body into a freezer that chest style will probably work better! :)

We have a chest freezer in the basement; love having it. Maybe upright could offer easier access and findability of items. Sometimes I have to put on mitts to dig in the chest freezer to prevent frostbite!

Cool air sinks, hot air rises, chest freezers are much more efficient.
In my house I have some of each, in my camper where electricity is at a premium I have a DC chest freezer which uses very little power to keep food cold.

We have had both types of Freezers. The benefit to the Upright Freezer is that you can see everything in it and it limits the amount of food stored so keeps the cost down.
The Chest Freezer, on the other hand, is made for people that like to buy in large quantities and save money. They help lare families that have enough money to fill them.

Thank you, Everyone (so far)!
The consensus seems to be "Upright".
However, the arguments for Chest freezers are convincing.
I may have to go with one of each.
Thanks again!
