If you don't know the area well and are not sure you like it - don't buy a house
If you're only gonna be there less than a few years - don't buy a house

If you just got married or divorced - don't buy a house

If you are planning to grow a family - don't buy a house (immediately)

If your finances could change dramatically in the next few years - don't buy a house
This may be a future blog post . . . LOL

False, not everyone because along with home ownership, comes with a hefty amount of responsibility like making the monthly mortgage payments on time, every time, make repairs, buy new appliances when they break down, pay the taxes, utilities, etc. Some people are better off renting.

Home again, home again...

In my humble opinion, the answer is no.

Many people who currently own homes aren't really in a position to own one.  Some are living beyond their means, some have no idea what's involved in maintaining a home, and some would simply do better moving back home with mommy and daddy.

And some... well, I find myself wondering who ties their shoes for them.

Not everyone should be a homeowner. As people who earn our living representing buyers and sellers in their home purchase and believe strongly that homeownership is the number one way most Americans build wealth, that doesn't mean that all people should have a home.  Those who cannot handle the monthly payments, those not responsible in home maintenance, those young and the elderly may not be equipped to be responsible homeowners. However, most people find that homeownership provides more than building wealth. It is pride of ownership, it is a sense of accomplishment, it is a place to live and raise a family. It is more than a house - it is a home.

Having skin in the game is always a wise investment covering all subjects. As far as owning a home or renting, we all need a place to lay our heads. So, it ends up being a math type problem (leaving affordability out of it), as to whether or not it makes sense in the short- or long-term examination. Long term? Owning pays off handsomely. People belong, a deep human nature dynamic. Short term? Subjective. NOTE: certain renter types have no pride of ownership stake, nor do they support communities. On a yes or no basis YES TO YOUR QUESTION Candice A. Donofrio

I think it is true, it should be the American dream to own a home, and owning a home is so much better than renting.  That dream should be enough to incentivize people to pay attention to their credit and save money for a down payment.

Should everyone be able to…yes.

Should everyone…no.

Can everyone…for more reasons than I can list it is impossible for everyone to be able to achieve homeownership. I do hope those that are experiencing life can one day obtain homeownership.

Someone may not buy at a certain point in time because they are getting their education first, move around too much ie. military or job, don't feel ready to put down roots, are staying with parents for one reason or another.  Are fine in a studio if single and working, climbing up that ol' ladder. What I'm saying is that it's not just a big responsibility to buy and keep up a house, but that there are other things important in life that are more important at a point in time.   Plus, yes, it's just too expensive to purchase where they want to live.

Everyone has an opinion and we need to listen to potential homeowners with respect. By asking their motivations, it gives them a chance to explain why they want or don't want the dream of owning a home - something everyone deserves in pursuit of the American Dream!

Candice A. Donofrio this is an excellent question!  My answer is False

Sometimes retirement communities are less expensive to rent than buy

Newly divorced may want to rent

Relocating without a relocation package

A young person just leaving home

There are many reasons why renting may be a wiser solution

False! Owing a home is a huge responsibility and not everyone wants to deal with that. Back in the day I taught the First Time Home Buyer class and there were a lot of students who never moved forward with buying. Once they realized what was involved just in the buying process and later in owning and maintaining a home, it scared them off. And a lot of people have unsettled life styles that require moving frequently (think military and contractors here at NASA, etc.) so it does not always make sense for certain people to own.

You reminded me the recent L.A. initiative for the  homeless population that is utterly uncontrollably large here and in the state in general. The city built 5 tiny house villages ( goal 1,200 homes) specifically to help to clean streets of L.A. Guess how well it worked for approximately 170,000 homeless.

False. Transaction costs here are the highest in the nation. I advise my buyers that if they are planning on moving in less than 5 years, it's possible that renting might be a better option. While most of my clients are focusing on the financial aspects, occasionally I come across a buyer that wants something else such as freedom to make changes in their home.
