I don't know what the perfect number is but, the managing broker has everything to do with that number. How many agents can each particular broker actually manage?

A lot depends on the people in charge and the people working for them. Have the right support team in place, have good management, have high caliber agents working for you... I'd say there could be no limit.
Conversely, get agents that need a lot of hand-holding and 3 may be too much!

It shouldn't matter the size of a brokerage if the broker is committed to help when questions/situations arise, agents are trained properly, office staff is on board and checks are disbursed in a timely manner.

A large office can run smoothly when systems are in place, there's a strong management team, and the people are well cared for. Take away one of those things and it will begin to crumble.

When the service and support needs of those that punch-in exceed the abilities of those that make a salary and parked in marked spaces.
You have to take great care of those that earn for you, so they are inspired to take great care of those that spend money and trust on your product or service. When Ailina Nelson worked for Richard Branson, he truly created a unique culture following this philosophy.

When things routinely fall through the cracks then the system is broken & more support is needed.

If you have an agent creating a team that dominates the rest of the agency, there is friction. There is no "I" in team Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS . Not the size, it's how well the individual players mesh and the chemistry. If the team is dog eat dog and out for number one and it's not the company, that is a real estate daycare full of drama and counter productive unprofessionalism. Backbiting helps the other agencies in your market place.

It depends on the broker. For some brokers, two agents is too many. Others can handle 200+. It's all about having the right systems in place, solid support staff, etc.
There are too many variables to give a specific answer.

Intimacy is no myth. If we come together for a purpose, then mixing, sharing, exploring is the norm. A sort of team develops. Then, team dynamics kick in. They consist of forming, storming, norming & performing actions. Isolation does not promote focused actions. When working, work. When playing...play

My number is 50 agents with 1 broker. Support staff is the most important I feel to keep the place running smoothly.

I do believe it has everything to do with the broker in charge, and the systems set up for the agent and the company.

I think it all depends on management Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS . I have not seen one to large here (offices as large as 45 agents) because they have all been managed well by Brokers working only as managers and then having an office staff under them.

I agree with most of the comments here.
The overall mix and how it blends is the key to running a smooth operation.
Leadership is necessary. An empty suit in any office serves no one.

I would say an office is too big when employees break off into factions and begin to hate others and don't hesitate to express it.
