I am a retired Registered Investment Advisor (RIA).  I have used technical analysis charts since before we had personal computers.

I used to manually draw weekly price charts on graph paper.  The first technical analysis software I used was with Microsoft DOS before Windows.

Candlestick charts are one useful tool of a market technician. They were originally used by Japanese rice traders in the 1800s.
