It seems that the answer has been provided.   I think it is as simple as finding the group that you want to join and clicking on the join button.  I haven't joined a group in many years.

Just to add something different I'll say that the process to unjoin works the same way AND another point is that when browsing groups they point out which are most popular. To get your post seen by the most people you may wish to join the top 10 or so.
