HI Fred, I believe that most email services allow us to have the option whether to automatically download photos and attachments, it sounds like yours is doing this.
If you trust the sender then go ahead and download.

That's a feature of Protonmail (which I also use) and several email clients (like K9 Mail for Android). "Remote Content" is simply content hosted outside of the email. For example, when someone sends a new listing email around, the images are hosted on Mailchimp/Constant Contact/etc. instead of being embedded in the email itself, as they used to be in the olden days. This allows for smaller emails and less taxing of the email infrastructure.
It is also commonly used for tracking pixels that programs like Mailchimp, bombom, etc. use.
If you know the sender, it's usually ok to load the remote content. For example, my association of Realtors emails are just a blank email unless I load the photos, same with the weekly home depot ads. I'm not likely to do this for real estate emails, as it's usually someone's signature that's the image (which as a side note, I think is one of the stupidest things to happen to email since the chain letter).

I have not heard of remote content either but we aren't supposed to be clicking on links that we don't know whether or not they are safe. Do you know the sender? I would ask them what it is and why you need to click on it.

Remote content means it doesn't automatically download because your email program doesn't let it. You can change settings to allow or to prompt depending on your program. Any ad I get on my phone I have to click a button that says show images. The sender may then know that it has been opened by you.

I have not read the other comments but I would think that you would be "redirected" to another site separate from the senders own site Fred Griffin Florida Real Estate

I have seen this in my Proton account a couple times when I bcc myself on an email that I send. It happened when I had to copy and paste the content of a email that went to my gmail account by mistake so I could forward it to someone. If you know and trust the sender, I would not worry about it but, if not, ignore it.
As an aside, I use gmail for things like online subscriptions, shopping, newsletters, etc. so they don't clutter up the Proton account. FYI Diana

My email will not auto load photos and such unless it comes from a trusted source Fred. I like that aspect of protection.
