Mace works well Roy. Just make sure the sprayer is turned away from you when it is pushed.

The cops have moved to a gel, less blowback related issues.  I'd get what they use.

Of course, if they're on drugs (painkillers, PCP, etc.) they won't be phased by anything.

Hi Roy - we have many of the same issues here. Pepper spray is good as long as you make sure that you're now downwind of it when you have to use it. 

Bear spray at Walmart is easy to find. The pink one is not useful.

Crime of all kinds continues to increase.  Pepper Spray will not cure the issues our Nation is facing.

I think that using your witts and staying out of dangerous situations is more important than fumbling for a weapon that may be used against you when it really counts.

I bought one online - American Defender, was pretty reasonable.

HI Roy... can't say I've ever given this any thought and have never carried anything in the 30 years I've been a real estate agent. The best defense is awareness and following safety protocols up front. I've never come even close to an incident that would require defensive spray as a Realtor. Car jackings and assaults are up in many places regardless of whether one is a real estate agent or not.

I'm guilty of carrying pepper spray, but never having tried it.  We should all know how far it sprays and how to aim it appropriately if we are going to carry it.

I have investigated this in depth. The police grade spray is effective with everything else being less effective when applied. However, it has to do with hitting the face for it to go to work right away. Unfortunately, criminals don't stand still and fight back. Stun guns (high quality), cattle prods and the like are more effective. The sound of a stun gun crackling electricity even deters animals and the stunning shock does not disappoint. Of course, in a struggle, it can be taken away from you or dropped. The gun remains the bottom-line defense item with your I am no victim stance

I have carried pepper spray.  Currently not.  The best defense is "awareness" to your surroundings ... a practice I adhere to daily.
