It would never occur to me to have a television on.

I once toured a home with a large screen tv playing a Disney movie. It looked and sounded good however what does it have to do with the home?

This seems more appropriate for a blog since it is interesting but I did not see a question.

Well said.  Out here the "box brownies" tend to put a nature scene on the TV during the editing process.

I did once have a picture of the TV on in a listing.  It was the court room scene of "My Cousin Vinny" and was of Fred Guinn (Herman Munster) as the judge, during Marisa Tomei's best scene of the movie, if not her acting career.  It brought someone out to the open house who almost wrote on the home.

Scene here

Hi Andrew,
I agree on all counts. I did notice in your School Street video the news was on the TV. I wondered about that at the time.

Home is where the hearth is.

Unless the Bears were in the Superbowl it would never even occur to me to have a large flatscreen on during a showing or openhouse.

I have, on occasion, used the flatscreen to access some 'music channel' to have soft music playing in the family room (ie: jazz, or some elevator muzak).  But otherwise, you're right.  The boob tube stays off.

I would keep the news off for sure.  If I had a nice music channel, I might have it on for a little background musing.

Fox news on in one room, CNN on in the next.  Equality and CoExist bumper stickers on the cars in the parking lot, with a rainbow colored MAGA hat on the hat rack as you walk into the property.  John Lennon's "Imagine" playing in the background with Ron Paul "End the Fed" posters in the study.

Keep em' guessing.

I had a listing where the lady left "CNN" on all day long, on a big TV.  "Oh, I never turn that off".   Me:  "Well, you will start turning it off now, thank you!"

Other listing... some kind of weird new age / jazz music playing all the time.  Same story...."You like that music, great, but it is distracting people who are looking at the house.  Please turn it off when you go to work in the morning."

I can't remember a time when we had the TV intentionally.   Our photographer may photo shop a bit and insert a golf course scene on the TV  or green up the grass a tad but that's about it.

I would tend to agree with you, and keeping the TV off. If I have to have something on, I will typically play some sort of lite instrumental music, nothing for potential buyers to stop and gawk at, or pay too much attention to while they are visiting.

I also agree with John Juarez, I'd make this a blog post, rather than a question.

This is a blog post and a good one.

TV should not be on in general! I have mine on music channel usually . . . in a listing even that is risky. Not everyone likes spa jazz . . . LOL

I do not have the TV on. Most of the time they can be complicated & I wouldn't want to mess it up for the seller.

There are few things uglier than that big black square.
The good news is ALL of us can fill that screen with a very curated message are information or entertainment or solutions.
I run the "FULL" version of the home tour.
Or a slide show of images of my choice.
Or, if the property is 'well seeded' have a video playing that articulates solutions available.
I would NEVER allow a situation where unknown messaging can occur.
And YES I would include decor and messaging that allows the seller to allow visitors to 'self-select.' If the owner suggests this is a great place to raise a family and they desire to 'pass it forward' I would not remove the family photos from the walls.

If the tv must be on- it should be on a music station- classical or a mellow jazz has not offended anyone...even if it's not the buyers style of music- I never had a buyer distracted by low music volume classical or jazz. Given that I live on the border of Sugar Hill where so many of the jazz legends have lived or visited- it's typically Jazz up here, while the Upper West Side tends to lean more toward classical music.

TV's are here to stay so if you don't have controversial content playing you should be OK. A good documentary should suffice without too much heartache from the peanut gallery.
