Survival is the primary concern. Many will need to begin new lives in new places.

Shayne I think many of us have given this subject thought this past month.  All bets would be off as people simply couldn't pay any amount and honestly they'd probably be living somewhere else.  Sad, very sad indeed.  I pray for all of them every day.

Life is a higher priority than real estate in such situations.

and, have you ever seen an insurance company come through and honor their commitments in a mass disaster situation?

It is beyond me to think of how I would respond to similar devastation to my home, my city, my state and country.

Insurances companies do not have the resources to insure for repair/replacement of the real estate destroyed by war.

Chaos, yet to be sorted out! Many who have left will never return to what once was. Doubt insurance companies are liable and sure the big institutions will suffer great loss not to mention the former homeowners . Stay tuned, it is not over yet!

I'd think that they would be more concerned about their lives then their homes Shayne Stone  HOWEVER if it happened here I would figure that somewhere in all those home owners insurance policy pages that my home is NOT covered under conditions of war. My home is paid for but I'd also guess that in those 18 pages called a mortgage people who do owe will still owe id a bomb hits their house.

I do not believe anyone in the country is worried about their home at this time or are they thinking about how they will handle it.

I believe they are focused on getting out of the country and for their safety/lives.

The unthinkable is happening there now, I can't even imagine having to go through such a thing.  I would think the only thing on their minds is staying alive.

I am reminded that during World War two, people left their homes in droves only to return and find others living in them. That was the injury. The insult? All public records for that time were destroyed making the current resident the owner via possession. In Ukraine, the whole system of an organized civilization is collapsing. Lack of water, food, utilities, transportation, fuel and shelter makes for little or no value Real Estate

Shayne, Peter Mark has a great answer for you. I'm sure this is weighing on your heart and mind. It is unbelievable these people are having to endure the attacks. I can't even imagine. I would guess mortgage companies would put a pause on any actions until things can be figured out. Hopefully these people will one day be able to get their homes back. With the Ukrainian people relocating all over, I think about how that will change where they settle. Will some of them never return home? I know we've had some come here to be with family. Will they decide to stay in America and other countries or go back? Only time will tell.

All insurance policies, from housing to cars, have an "act of war" exclusion.

Your insurance does not cover acts of war. I always thought that was an odd addition to the policy.

Acts of War are excluded from insurance typically.  And the priorities of anyone living through such a situation has to be survival.  I am heartbroken over the brutality of Putin. God bless Ukraine.

This is a very difficult time for all involved and I don't believe too many are thinking about insurance -- but of their life sustaining efforts.  I am praying for all in harms way.

Like everyone said, Acts of War are excluded from insurance policies but that would not be the biggest concern of the Ukrainian people. Finding a safe place overrules anything else right now. Not only did they fall prey to Stalin, now it is another murderous terrorist. Power grabbing Putin has gotten the attention of the world and eventually greed will be his downfall.

Of course, on a much smaller scale the War in Northern Ireland is a prime example of "tens of thousands of people violently displaced" and according to historical analysis conducted by researchers Sean Connolly and Gillian McIntosh, this was the largest movement of civilians in Europe since the outbreak of World War II.

I lived it and I can tell you, your mortgage is the last thing you consider!   Your only thought is to get to safety, wherever that may be.   An interesting conversation :  tens of thousands of people were violently displaced in Northern Ireland

WOW, PeterMark SEO  great insight thanks! I really hope all goes well with y'all & family in Poland.

And I know that most people are VERY concern over saving their Life and Family than saving their homes / houses! No doubt...

But it still makes me wonder what types / kind of protection one can do to protect their finances - other then taking their money out of the bank.

I mean, like if I have a mortgage. Am I still responsible for the payments and the same for insurance and any other bills related to the property?

Or does it all come to a halt or suspend for a period of time!

JUST MAKES ONE THINK!!!

What we've seen in the mortgage space with other disasters not covered by insurance is that FEMA steps in to replace property - it's an arduous process, but most lenders will work with home owners in those circumstances.  We've seen it with wildfires and hurricanes, where properties are destroyed and insurance can't or won't cover it, federal dollars come into play.

While we have our Fed, Europe has the EU, which I'd expect would act in a similar way.

Not sure if it's the same in Ukraine, but they're receiving an immense amount of financial aid from around the world, I'd hope some of that goes toward housing their population that's been effected.
