We're the government and we're here to help???

Sorry Buzz, just one more reason we chose just over the border in WV to be our new home.  We can get to Liz's family in about 30 minutes without Maryland's rules and tax rates.

OMG, no. There are hardly any mandates here for anything... And here, our town is 300 square miles.. Our county is 5300 square miles. We have to deal with mountains, icy roads, dirt roads, goat trails... I'm betting this jurisdiction never mandates chargers for electric cars. Our TOWN is 300 square miles - apparently electric cars can get 250 miles w/no charge. If I have to show 4 houses in a day, I'd run out of juice. No, no, no.

God I hope not!  For all California's talk about an "affordability crisis" they keep finding more and more ways to increase a builder's costs.  I wouldn't put it past Suck-ramento to do this though.  The solar requirement is already bad enough.  "Yeah!  Let's add $30k to the cost of new homes and in the same breath complain about affordability at the same time!"

I just find it funny that developers build solar farms in the middle of nowhere and are still able to meet the requirement without "uglifying" their homes with solar panels.

I do not think that builders are required to add EV capability. Yet, here in Silicon Valley, that would likely be a plus for many buyers. Builders, statewide, must add solar to new construction (with some exceptions) per California state law.

I don't think that they do, but the good builders will hopefully do it since EV's are the future.

I can see it as an option, but not as a requirement. It will add to the cost of construction and contribute nothing if you are driving a gas powered car>

2022 new law yes for all of California here it is

https://up.codes/s/electric-vehicle-ev-charging-for-new-construction

The International Code Council ICC announced changes for new construction that allows every home to have one electric car.

Most states with sunshine passed laws that start 2022

The Level 2 charger is what is required. Builder puts in 208-240 Volt, 40 Amp Circuit. Cost varies from $2000- 4000 extra. Many states have tax rebates

here's the news https://www.iccsafe.org/wp-content/uploads/PRELIMINARY-2019-GROUP-B-OGCV-RESULTS.pdf

Home is where the hearth is.

I haven't heard anything about a "mandate", but I think it would be a good idea for new construction builders to include EV chargers in their new builds.

Dear Buzz,

I have not heard of it being mandated. So far as I know, it is like running a large outlet, like the one for an electric stove, for example (of course with a different outlet). However, if you are already doing major electrical upgrades and wanting an electric car in the not too distant future, maybe it would be a good idea to put at least the line in ahead of time. For new builds, it would make the install much more pretty.
