Our 2 car garage is essentially a cat shelter.  We have four cats that have possession.  They didn't get along well with the other indoor kitties, so one lives in the storage loft and the other 3 on the main level along with my toolboxes and our freezers.  Our two current cars have never been inside the garage.  Most of the cats are senior citizens, so we may eventually use the garage as a garage again.

And that is their choice...I guess they will figure out how to unfreeze their car doors.  A

When it's time to sell the house, clearing out the garage is often the first thing on the list!

Ahhh, the "why do other people do things that way" question. Since the beginning of time, people have wondered at other people's actions. But there is no way to know what they're thinking ... unless you ask them! :-)

Yep it's real common - garages are used for offices, exercise areas, play rooms for kids, and storage.

I agree with Ryan Huggins - Thousand Oaks, CA is common in my area too. People store all kinds of crap in their garage. Some even partially live in their garage - no room for their Lexus or Mercedes which is parked on the street. 

We keep our cars in the garage. We keep our cars for a long time. Shelter from sun and the elements protects their value and attractiveness.

My garage is down my long driveway and my attach garage entrance is in the back of my house. I do leave my car in my upper driveway easier to get in and out especially when it snows. I'm use to frozen doors and icy windows on my vehicle. Besides less snow to shovel when you get snowed in. 

In my area this happens all the time. Best ones are the ones with 3 car garages & everyone is in the drive.

Everything is frozen here at this time of year. Nothin' like a good hail storm to make you value your garage.

Putting a vehicle inside is a waste of space, they come built with a weatherproof shell already.

And when the hail hits, I clean up with insurance related PDR (Paintless Dent Repair) consultation (I live part-time in Colorado). MANY are not taking advantage of protecting vehicles in their garages, but I help make the claimants happy with positive resolutions, and that makes me happy in more than one way.

I'm occasionally in Aurora, I've got to challenge you to a chili cook-off one of these days!

Not a problem we worry about here in Charlotte... cars don't get all frozen up. But with virtually no basement or attic storage in most of our houses, garages become a space for storage as a necessity.

It's common out here too.  I don't get it.

Ahhh.... first world problems... The accumulation and retention of too much stuff.  

We are rare homeowners in CA, we garage both are cars at both our house and vacation house, we like our paint jobs to remain shiny.

Nothing worse than a iced up frozen garage door!!  Hit the automatic start with the the defrost and heater on blast and by the time coffee is done, the car is toasty!  Reverse in the the summer with A/C. 

Most people have their driveways cleared by snow removal service by 6am.

I see a lot people parking in driveway or on street. Some subdivisions do not allow that though. No worries of cars freezing in my selling area Will.

you mean you can put a car in the workshop/storage locker? cold weather can wreak havoc on the garage door springs also, car is nice and clear of snow or ice but stuck in the garage.

We keep our cars in the garage but many in the neighborhood park on the street.

Frozen car doors are not an issue where I live.

Some people don't seem to mind parking outside. We don't have extreme hot or cold but we do have it. Some neighbors have never parked in their garage or they park one car in the garage. When we purchased our house we had the garage extended a little so we could park both cars in the garage. It was important to us. We moved from FL where your cars can become very hot while sitting outside so it was a habit.

Yep, happens all the time. Had a friend who lived in a northern climate and never put his cars in the garage. Retired and moved to the Carolinas and both cars are snug a s a bug in a rug in the garage. Now he does not understand why he didn't do it up North. Go figure!

Hmmm, my truck stays outside, the zero-turn, snowblower, and summer furniture stay on the one side and the better half's car on the other.

If I put up a shed for the other stuff, it would cost oner $1000 and the town wants another $41 in taxes each year!

Oh, at least my trash can stays in the area!

Why, Why, Why?  That's is the universal question on why people do what they do.  It's a mystery and always will be.  So as each reason is individual, you will have to ask. The answers will amaze you!  

ps:  I park my car in the garage when I come home, unless I know I am going out again in the next few hours. Then I park in the driveway and don't have to take the extra time to open the garage door and back out. It just makes sense to just jump in the car and go --

I built shelves above inside the garage to store items. Ground level is for whats needed. 

We are creatures of habit so parking in the driveway or on the street is a habit.  I'm from Detroit and we didn't have a garage door opener so parking in the garage added several extra step getting the car into the garage when getting home and getting it out in the morning.

When we bought our home decades ago, we made a pact that the only thing in our garage was our cars. And it is still that way.

It's amazing how folks' belongings spill over into the garage, and basement too. As the saying goes, the crap expands to fill the space!

no garage and my door has been frozen shut a few times, but if it is, I'm not driving anywhere anyway.

Probably cheaper than renting out storage units!!

we have freezing weather from time to time, but no garage.

They store the $200 toys in the garage and the $40,000 ride sits in the drive.
I can only assume they want to give those midnight prowlers a door to check.
My ride sleeps under a roof. When the time to make stuff comes, things unfold and form a very efficient shop.
Be aware, those $200 toys are easily carried away by the midnight prowlers.

I read something similar that only in America, do people keep typically one of their most valuable possession (in addn to their home) outside and have their garages full of STUFF!   Criminals may like cars outside as they could break into them and push a garage door opener for house accesss or take the opener & visit a 2nd time!

We don't have to deal with car doors freezing here but when we lived up north in the snow belt, it was not uncommon to leave work at night and find the lock on the car door frozen. I carried a cigarette lighter and would carefully heat the key and insert in the lock, repeat until it unfroze.

We had an oversize garage at our house so plenty of room for two cars plus lawn tractor, snow blower, etc.

I know of one house here in Florida where the two car garage was converted to expand the master bedroom so cars had to be parked in the driveway. Personally, I would have bought a bigger house and kept the garage...the things you see in this business!

I have three vehicles and my workshop in the garage...and the vehicle I am driving today?  My Suburban that might be sold and is sitting outside...in the weay of the Jeep I would normally drive in snowy weather. But hey...the Escalade is staying clean!!

Sometimes we don't realize the excess of material things we accumulate and for some reason it usually ends up in the garage.
