Not sure that I want to pay attention to the 'sky is falling' kind of predictors. Of course they want to raise prices on consumers.

Not yet, I just received the renewal and new policy today so have not looked at them yet...almost afraid to but will be calling him on Monday. I would love to see a return to what Allstate did years ago when they created Allstate Floridian so rates were based on Florida and we did not get hit with across the board increases for all the damage in the rest of the country due to fires, floods, tornadoes, etc.

Hard to feel bad for an industry that FORCES coverage and relies on subsidies from responsible people and has an $825 BILLION surplus as noted in the article.....they should just keep dimishing that surplus until things balance out.

No, I focus on my own industry and livlihood.  If I started worrying about other industries, there are others I'm more concerned with than insurance.

The industry will be just fine, they will compensate themselves for the payouts; premiums will be higher. One way to look at this is that the insureres might force homebuilders to build more secure dwellings for their area, e.g. beach front homes will need to be elevated and reinforced properly to withstand a flood or strong storm. I  believed this has happened in Miami and definitely in the New York region after super storm Sandy several years ago. 

I have a relative who works for an insurance agent in the California Gold Country. He checks out the homes of new home insurance clients as part of the risk assessment regarding that property. Problem is, that insurance company is not writing any new policies! The company feels that it already has enough risk in an area that is more fire prone than other areas. He also tells me that other insurance companies are CANCELING policies of some existing clients, trying to reduce risk.

I have a call into him to discuss my homeowner's insurance. The question: do I have enough coverage with the significant increase in building materials?

I doubt that your insurace broker knows anything of the industry plans on this or anything else.
