I run my business.  My business does not run me. 

When I turn off my phone.  Sometimes, we just need to disconnect.

Pre-real estate so that was around 1983.

It would not feel like a true vacation if I didn't receive at least one real estate call.

What does enjoying a holiday mean to the individual?  Let's start there.  For me, I love this job so days like today are boring to me because no one needs me.  I would be enjoying the holiday more if I were working.

I enjoy all my scheduled holidays and do not consider business an interruption.

It happens more frequently it seems when you decide to live in the moment.  I can remember times when that was not the case.  Too bad.  Rather sad.   

Even in semi-retirement I seem to find a reason making it necessary to head to the office Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS . That being said I very rarely go to the office on a Sunday.

Zero interruptions?  Not in a long time!  

Vacations with minor interruptions, standard business issues, no fires to put out; I enjoy vacations like that a couple of times per year.

My business model, my type of focus does not typically lend to holiday distractions. 

I became accustomed to "interruptions" long long ago, Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS ... and don't even think about it.  I consider it normal life, if in my business ...

I never had an issue with enjoying any of our holidays....  if I needed to answer my phone, I would....but it rarely happened on a holiday.... I did not work wih buyers....only listings and new homes.... none of my clients ever bothered me on a holiday.... 

All the time Paul.  I make it clear that holidays are family time.  Clients respect that.

In retirement, every day is a holiday Paul.  So, I'd say yesterday.

Probably during my Honeymoon in Greece in September 2019, it was great just cutting off all work related issues. No matter what you do for a living you need to switch off and recharge at some point. It leads to burn out if you dont.

Today.

I don't typically take most holidays off, but if I do, then I will truly enjoy. 

Everyone who knows me knows that if I don't answer my phone, text messages or email, I'm either sleeping or in front of someone else. They know that I will get back to them in a few short hours.

Whether it's family, friends or clients, they understand that I run my business the way I wish to be treated.  I don't  like constant phone interruptions from others, leaving me feeling like there's a bigger name on the other line...and I don't want them to feel that way either. 

And, yes, that goes for time with family during the holidays or on Sundays. If someone doesn't want to do business with me because I don't 'sit' on my phone 24/7, then I'm 100% cool with that! If they need me, they understand that I will be prompt in getting back to them - and then, my attention is 100% on THEM!

Once you have reached a certain point in your life your perspective changes and you are officially removed from humdrum, repetition and routine. Every day is a holiday, every meal a banquet and each day filled with opportunity to do or not do as one likes....

If you love what you do....

it is not an interruption.

But, from my experience, those who are incapable of recognizing boundaries are real estate agents. It is my choice whether a change my voice recording OR let others jerk my chain.

Every holiday, day off or vacation I take, I have client coverage from my team and I go off the grid with my family. You simply can't reach me direct when I'm off work. I enjoy them all or what's the point of leaving?

I recently went away for 3 weeks and thoroughly enjoyed it.  I did get calls, but was able to refer them to the appropriate parties.  I can't remember ever going away for that long, but much needed. 

We have to remind ourselves that it's up to us to control that.

Interesting that you ask Paul. I’m volunteering my time on MLK Day to Arts to Zion Tour today. If a holiday falls on a workday, it is just that!

This past week with my Grand Kids in town.

It would have been prior to the Smartphone because we are like turtles and the Smartphone is our shell.

The only time I can truly have a full day off is sitting on a beach without any phone service on a tropical island. Otherwise I will be scanning my phone, looking at emails, and although the calls may go to voice mail, i am listening to voice mails. Getting a new listing, a new buyer is too important to take a whole day off without calls. I will tell my clients i am away and to email, so ongoing business can handle a 20 second email response without anyone getting upset. New buyers or sellers cant wait, they move on, so i will reach out to them. It is the life i chose as a Realtor and no bother to secure the future.

My clients usually leave me alone for the big holidays, unless they text just to say Happy _____.
