I have no idea about what builders spend, and it seems many new home buyer upgrade, countertops, backsplashes and cabinetry beyond the builder's standard kitchen.

I have no idea... builders do not share their numbers with us. And when buyers can upgrade their kitchens for additional costs it becomes even more difficult since selections are unique to each buyer.

I have no idea. Builders are different as are the types of homes they build. It is not information shared with the public.

It varies on square footage of home, cost allowance, financial qualification and tastes of the potential buyer. The design center for builders is notorious for pushing the price of a home into the upper atmosphere. Buyers on a budget need to be aware of that prior to picking out upgrades.

Kitchen seems to be the center piece of a Great Room these days. My neighbor took a Heloc and spent $115,000.00 on a restored medium sized kitchen.  The problem is that $2000 monthly Heloc payment and 2 mortgages, and 3 car payments is above and beyond what they are capable. The recession came home value tanked. Had they focus on managing their budget go slowly that beautiful kitchen Heloc will not trigger a domino effect on their finances and marriage.

The kitchen when broken down has mandatory and acceptable components plus they have to be arranged in a triangle configuration as a rule. Wall and counter space plus cabinets round the concept out. The cost for a standard set-up can be as low as $10k to as high as (?) depending on appliances, upgrades and intent. Two things we know for sure: 1. it must function and 2. must be clean as it remains a focal point for the house

The comps dictate the formula. You can't blanket % it, it comes down to what do kitchens in THAT neighborhood contribute to the value of the home and of course what materials and appliances are trending in that given area & time.

I am not sure you can really find those numbers.  It would be nice.  cost of kitchen largely depends on the cost of the appliances, cabinets and countertops.  Sky is the limit there.  I had one customer send 50.00 a pop for custom, designer draw pulls.   but thanks to Google check this out, as good as any

I typed a search and it came back with this web-site, which stated that an average remodel of a mid-size kitchen is about $22,000 and has a ROI between 60-120%. There was a tip, too - we should never make the kitchen fancier than the rest of the house, or the neighborhood. https://www.kbrkitchenandbath.com/blog/kitchen-remodel-cost/

I do not know how much is allocated at a $ level. I do know it's one of the top rooms that is expected. I personally have spent serious money doing upgrades but then I bet if I think about it the Master BA came in there too.

Due to variations in cost across our many service areas, I think it is hard to put anything other than a guesstimate on the cost of upgrades and remodeling. Also, I know that we have the resources in our Team to provide upgrades and repairs to prep for sale at less cost than if the homeowner went into the market and procured the same items.

What I will say with assurance is that modern features attract buyers and are attractive to homeowners and certainly improve value.

Low to medium end builders here tend to put in carpet, cabinets, etc. that buyers won’t accept even when they swear they won’t spend a dime at the design center. They typically walk out having spent 20k or more. I don’t know the numbers but it can’t be too high.

At $200k i would not put a 40k kitchen in. I would stick for under 20k. If buying, fixing and selling it would be like 12k. For a 400k home, then a 40k kitchen may be worth it here in NH

I have no idea - the ones that we help with renovations are renovated on different levels. A $500K home can have a minimal reno needed for $20K and another $500K home can require a $60K reno done.

There is no rule of thumb - it costs what it costs. My mission is to be 100% sure my clients get their money back out of that kitchen upgrade.
