That's a fun question Jennifer Parrish . I like Annettes answer but I think i'd just say that when there is no chimney Santa parks on the roof and comes in the back door. He passes through the kitchen looking for cookies and leaves your presents under the tree.

I am with Bob "RealMan" Timm - the door almost always works.  And kids don't really care.  When they figure out Santa is a commercializing Christmas scam - it's not because some homes don't have chimneys.

Santa has outgrown ALL chimneys. He uses his magic key to get in through the door.  No need to leave your door unlocked for Santa to get in.

Jennifer,

You’ve come to the right place for answers. I see the group has already provided you with a wide variety of good answers.

Of course you could always tell the kids your HOA doesn’t allow fireplaces but requires that Santa come in through a door.

Might as well start the “are HOA’s good or bad” argument while their young.

You are raising your kids to be agents, right?

You can use Rawlings or Tolkin as your guide to other dimensions that the young folk would/could understand. After all, in 2019 Santa's got an app for that.

But, make sure the birthday is understood first and Santa is just a party jester.

I'm a sexagenarian and have never asked that question. If I start asking now I might jinx his perfect performance record and I cannot take a chance on that. Experience counts and he knows how to use it Jennifer! The best I can recommend is to have the kids check all doors and windows on Christmas morning where a trail of sand might give them a clue, not saying you'll find one, he's a tricky guy that Santa!

Have a MERRY CHRISTMAS

Too easy...if the kids ask (and I've never heard one ask this Q), just say "ask your father". That is what my parents used on us any time they did not know the answer to a Q.

Of course, when we asked my father he would say "ask your mother" and we would reply "we already did and she said to ask you". Then they would confer in private and took so much time we eventually forgot that we asked the Q.

As a kid we didn't have a fireplace but we had a chimney. Kids don't know where any of that stuff leads. Maybe it lets him out in the basement. They see something popping out of the roof & they figure Santa must slide down that.

He lands on the roof and repels down. You leave the door unlocked and he sneaks in while they are sleeping. My husband used to throw a few pebbles on the roof (to make it sounds like reindeer hooves) and shake Christmas bells outside if they were reluctant to go to sleep!

I can picture Santa, sled and reindeer on top of your roof...looking for an entrance to your house...giving up and leaving for the next delivery.

Better go up and see if he leaves the gifts on the roof.
