I have not personally sold a home when putting Christmas outside lights has been a part of the process.  Of course, your statement(is it a question?) is a bit confusing.  To me.

If you decorate for the Holidays as a part of your life, why would the sale of your home during the Holiday Season stop you from doing so during the marketing period of the home?

Decorate as you normally would...unless the home is vacant.

If I were selling my own personal home during the holiday season, I would opt not to put up exterior lights.  It's just one less thing to do in the midst of packing for a move.

Yes, if not over-the-top. But a seller might decide to keep life simpler during this time, given the sale and getting ready to move.

It's up to the seller. Some are just too busy. Some won't even put up a tree. I think its a nice touch. Why be the only one on the street with a dark house. Light it up!

I say Yes!!  Here in Homer Alaska the lights go on early and stay on long after Christmas is over. Festive and inviting! and its dark here all the time! So lights are like a welcome mat lighting the way to your home!

That's up the the individual.  I wouldn't say "no" if asked by a client, but I wouldn't encourage it either.  If they did, I'd have discussions about "less is more" and "if it can be seen from space, the buyer will likely avoid it."
