Washington has a 6.5% sales tax but no income tax.  I prefer a sales tax over an income tax. It's impossible to cheat the system with deductions. You pay for what you buy.  I wish our Federal income tax system would be replaced by a National sales tax.  Then those who don't report income (or cheat the system in other ways) still pay for what they buy.

Ohio does have a sales tax and it can vary depending on county/city.

There's a real estate transfer tax also that varies county to county.  Most counties in my market it's $3 per $1000 of sales price.

I'm in California and I believe there is a "fee" just for thinking of another tax or stream of revenue enhancement that any number of people within the boundaries  of the state, most counties and nearly all cities can imagine.  After all, we are The Golden State for a reason.

I think there are some, but their other taxes are sky high.  Nevada doesn't have income tax, for example, but they have one heck of a hotel tax from what I hear.

California still has sales tax.  Ventura County (where I'm at) is 7.5% while my neighbor to the east, and a 10 minute drive, Los Angeles County is over 9.5%

People used to drive here to buy cars, until the state changed sales tax on cars to cout for the county of residence not the county of purchase.

In CT we have a tax on everything. Sales tax is just a given. I just paid about a grand in taxes for our two cars for 2019. I paid the sales tax when I bought them & then I get to pay taxes on them every year I have them registered here in CT. We just put a sales tax on Plastic Bags so now you can pay .10 per bag everytime you go shopping. There is of course, property tax, that's a fun one! and don't forget State Income Tax!
It's a wonderful time to get out of CT. Join the exodus & make sure you call me to list your home. You won't regret it! Even with the Real Estate Sales Tax, state and local. (And go somewhere they wont tax you to death)

Oregon doesn't have any sales tax - I'm in WA but on the opposite side of the state from Oregon. Our sales tax adds up to a little over 8% which includes a mix of state and local taxes so sales tax varies from county to county, city to city in WA. If I lived in southern WA near the OR border I would probably make the drive to OR for higher end purchases - cars - anything that makes sense to take the time to drive to another state to save X% on sales tax.

Like Carol Williams stated - at least we don't have any state income tax here in WA state and there's no tax on fresh unprepared foods. And a sales tax is in my opinion a better form of taxation compared to income tax. I feel for the states that have both sales tax and income tax.

That said - all the states get their tax dollars one way or another - regardless of the combination of sales tax, income tax, property tax, licensing tax, liquor tax, tabacco tax, gasoline tax, excise taxes (transfer taxes) etc etc.

As Dan Pittsenbarger and Carol Williams pointed out, we do have sales tax but no income tax. I live close enough to ID that we can go there for large purchases. Gas is quite a bit less in ID as well so I try to fill up when I am over there. I am not close enough that it makes sense to drive and fill up though I have friends that are and we were just talking about sales/income/gas taxes this weekend and which state it would be better to live in.

Oregon has no sales tax, but they are finding other names for taxes on sales activity. There are lodging taxes for example. And gas tax, liquor tax, cigarette tax, etc, all just added to the retail price to maintain the illusion of no sales tax. And a tax on marijuana (40% in some countries) which is passed by the retailer to the consumer.

Also, OR counties and cities can impose a sales tax, but the state does not. Given the woeful budget of many counties, there have been ballot measures seeking to impose a sales tax on specific transactions, such as food and beverage sales. Such a ballot measure recently failed in Hood River County, but other counties have passed it.

Washington used to let Oregon residents show their driver's license and not pay the WA sales tax at the point of sale. That just changed; Oregon residents now have to request reimbursement from WA the following year. Vancouver, WA car dealers are going to see a decrease in sales activity as a result.

Indiana has a 7 percent state sales tax; food and prescription drugs are exempt.  There is no transfer tax on the purchase/sale of a home.

I would assume the largest sales taxes are paid on the purchases of vehicles.

Most counties and larger cities tack on extra sales taxes for hotel stays and some cities for restaurant sales.
