I like to get the person's contact information and have mine given to that person simulataneously. That way I can also ensure that contact is made and I'm not waiting on someone to call me.

Numerous times I've been given a referral with no contact information.  I was told, they will call you. A month later the person who made the referral followed up with me.  Well, I don't have any contact information and they never called me.  Situations like this are more like passing on a blind lead.

Ideally, I'd like an introduction via email with cross-contact information provided. That way either party can then reach out to the other.

I prefer to get the friend's info from the client, but have the client contact the friend and let them know I'll be calling.  That is, unless the client is OK with me calling right away or previously told them they would give me their number.

I prefer to take the lead.  Many moons ago (when I used business cards) I had them perforated so that I could write down the contacts details and then give them my card.   (I said MANY moons ago)  Long before cells phones and computers.  They loved that I was being so pro active and could look forward to my call.

I typically find out what is best for the referred client. The agent knows them well and it's good to start off on the best foot possible.  It's gone both ways and worked out fine every time.

I definitely prefer the client referral call me, gives a very positive start to the relationship, as they are hiring me, I am not hiring them, etc.. ... but having said that... I always ask the referrer... what is best.. and will reach out first if that is expected or encouraged.

I prefer to have the contact information - there's no assurance they will phone me directly. What if the agent types the wrong phone number? What if the referral dials the wrong number?

If anyone is going to mess up on the call, I want that responsibility!

OH and I tell them to give the referral my number too - that way when I reach out, they'll recognize the number.
