As a manufacturing engineer in the mid 80's - the shutting down of Amercian manufactuing facilities and exportation of American jobs and industry was by far the biggest economic error the leaders of this country have ever made.

In my opinion the tarrifs will not cause prices on US manufactured items to go up - they will come down. Manufacturing gets cheaper and more efficient as the numbers produced goes up. The more we make here, the lower the prices can go.

Create American jobs for us. Not Chinese jobs for them.

More tariffs means more money for in the coffers of us Americans. Thus less taxes - we already received less taxation.

We are an incredibly short sighted and impatient society and must not lose sight of the end result of the tariffs,  which is to compel the communist Chinese government to institute fairer and freer trade with the United States.

  It is a daunting task and both major political parties have sacrificed the American  worker for cheaper Chinese goods with the admission of China to the WTO late in President Clinton's second term.  

We are fools to allow such a nation to force the transfer of US technology in order to do business with them, continue to allow them to steal US  intellectual property that US companies and entrepreneurs have invested billions in,  only to have the communist government and military reap instant profits from pirated technology.  

The purpose of the tariff is not to protect American industry or create revenue but to use as an economic weapon to get the communist government to resume serious talks and bring about a fairer trade system.

China is destined to win such a contest as patience and the long game are what matter in the end in the Oriental way of thinking,  contrasted with our impatient Occidental ways of instant gratification and lack of ability to suffer in the short run so as to not disrupt our creature comforts.

How different things could be if our nation was unified in supporting the administration to achieve a fairer trade system with China.

As to why all this is happening, we were mainpulated (and asleep)  by and in regards to China over the decades to this they win and we break even or lose position. After the tariff on washing machines raised the price of a new washing machine, manufacturers also raised the price of dryers because people buy them in sets. This is right now at your local appliance store.

The price of american made steel has gone up to match the tariff price of imported steel.

Anybody who thinks american manufacturers are not going to rake advantage of this are just being naive.
