I've also found that management may 'say' they care - if they care, they would do something to make those who 'work' for them, know they are appreciated.

Bill, this is an interesting question, especially in the context of Liz's volunteer work.  

Early in my legal career, a mentor shared advice that struck me as counter-intuitive.    She cautioned, pro bono clients would likely be among my least grateful clients.   The observation proved to have occasional merit, as well as the lack of cooperation appearing correlated with non paying clients.   Go figure.

From a sense of public service, I will still screen for appropriate pro bono cases, but sometimes I want to scream, "help me, help you!"  

On the other hand, some of those cases became deeply satisfying on a personal level.   It sounds like your wife might be experiencing some of that ambivalence.

Option c: I move on and have numerous times throughout my professional career going back to 1971. In really large organizations a heart-to-heart is useless in my experience. And even in a smaller one often useless... I had a couple of those with a small brokerage I was with and wasn't listened to. When I quit, suddenly faced with losing one of their top agents, they wanted to listen... too little, to late at that point.

What I have done in the past - I attempted to fix the issue with the organization first. When that did not work, I searched for another organization and left.

What I've learned is that if the organization acts as though they do not value you, they don't. And it's a reflection on them. So if this ever happens to me in the future, I'd probably just leave, without trying to make things better first. Life's too short.

For me it would be "e" Other. 

First I would re-evaluate myself any my purpose for doing what I was doing.  Secondly I would write down any and all, big or small, actions or inactions that I did or failed to do that were to some degree not in the groups best interest (ie blow off a meeting I "should" have gone to, not return a call, belittle another group memeber, not do something I said I would or otherwise indicated I would do, bad mouthed the group - either any of the projects or one or more members or the group or how it works or how it's structured - to another person either to "vent" or to actively gain support for my point of view/opinion which resulted in the person(s) I'm talking to thinking less of the group or something related to the group. And once that is all out there in front of me so I can see all the things big and/or small in significance, and say yes I did (or didn't do those) those actions. And take full responsibility for my actions or inactions, then I will probably feel better about the group as long as the group actually has a purpose of doing good and is at least to some degree in alignment with my own purposes.

Folks rarely quit/leave a good intentioned group because of anything that was done or not done "to" them. They will leave because of things they did/said  "to" the group, or for failing to do/say things they should of done/said.

So once I cleaned this point up on myself chances are the feeling of "wanting to leave" or feeling under appreciated and the pulling in of all sorts of reasons that "motivate" or foster feelings of wanting to leaving will probably be gone. For example the feeling of not being appreciated.  I doubt that feeling appreciated is the reason anyone joins any group - it is part of the "pay" for sure,  but it's not "usually" the purpose for joining a group. The purpose usually lies in the area of "help"  and to help others or to help improve a condition/situation. And chances are that "help" is still needed. And giving the help is the real pay - not recognition from one's team mates.

Now that I have myself cleaned up, I then would evaluate the group and it's purpose and decide based on the greatest good, if continuing with the group is the highest and best use of my time and energy or should I be doing something else that creates a bigger and more pro-survival impact on my life, my family and the community. If the clean up step isn't done thoroughly, the answer to the second part will almost always be  I should be doing something else. If the clean up step is done fully, then most of the time the person's original purpose for joining the group/activity will be revitalized and they are happy to carry on.  For those that have actually grown and now need a bigger game - they will move on to bigger more demanding activity.

Wow. Sometime I get carried away.  Sorry about that but that is what I would do.

e. Perhaps a combination of b and c.  Life is way to short to accept less than what we know we want.  I would not have a heart to heart.  Been there. Done that.  My experience is it does more harm than good.  

I would create my happy place and move on.  I did that when I went independent in January 2012.

Sounds like you don't feel appreciated... or part of the team as the odd man or woman out. You would not lessen involvement and hang around and should communicate the issues to see if resolution can happen. But it may be time to venture out on your own and build your own organization. If close to retirement, you might just ride it through. Are you doing a good job and is your performance up to par? Is it a personality conflict? Just list more, market harder and sell sell sell and you won't get bogged down with "I am not appreciated". The need for that goes away.

I'd probably do D and if that didn't create a better environment, I'd move on. I read a book about 20 years ago called the Baby Boomerang. I told my clergy friends that when my church became the church in the book, I was done. And, I was. I had invested 20 years as the pastor with incredible results, but when the church turned inward and became more self-interested than outreach interested I was gone. I've never regretted that decision.

I am not sure what that means.

If I'm a volunteer and not feeling the love, I go and do something else for for someone else.

I the 'Good bye' option is not available, "D" is the best course of action.

I'd start, "Hey Boss Man, over the past 3 months I've made about 1,800,422 suggestions regarding how business can be grown, delivery improved and moral grown. I feel I am making a contribution but I'm not seeing any real appreciation or acknowledgment from management. Help me out here. Why are my suggesting being ignored or what has changed regarding the company vision?"

Of course, it can be easily seen I will not HEAR what the BossMan says until I become a listener, and that tends to change things a LOT.

The real answer to this question is the two parties have drifted apart and have lost track of each ones needs and vulnerabilities. Whether it a marriage of a business relationship, keeping track of the emotional changes is how the connect stays relevant.

This is when the skill of 'turning towards' becomes essential. This involves responding, IS there more? and listening with the heart.

An issue with this question that few understand is the lack of heart to understand if it is YOU, that perhaps this is an opportunity for improvement means you carry baggage, unfinished business into the next relationship/business and hear once more the rhyming of history.

Bliz ~ Interesting timing on this question regarding brokerage affiliation.  I am with a family owner brokerage that is run by the children of the founder, who are in their 60's and I don't see anyone in the next generation with the accumen or desire to carry the flag into the future.  One of these days I expect that we will have merged or been purchased, so I have a very short list of brokerages I could see myself with.  

I will go with A for a period to see how the new company rolls, but with a backup plan C.  I think that D is highly overrated except at possibly a very small company, so skip that

Businesswise as well as personally, I have always favored (d) heart to heart first. However if a mutual agreement could not be reached, then I (b) lessened my involvement time before I got the hell out! Part of the beauty of real estate (for both consumers and realtors) is you can really pick and choose whom you prefer to work with/for.
