We have them in the state, the county, and some towns have them as well. Sometimes the buyer pays, sometimes the seller, sometimes both. I don't care for them - just another ploy to get money.

Yes we do & we tried to protest eons ago with no luck.
We have state & county at $1/1000.
Villages charge lowest $1/1000 up to $3/1000. City of Chicago has $7/1000 with buyer & seller paying something.
Welcome to IL where they have their hand in your pocket 24/7.

We have had a $3.00 per thousand real estate transfer fee since I got licensed in 1995. There have been attempts to raise as high as $7/thousand ... but we have a strong Realtor base who have kept it at bay. Thankful for that.

Not sure how you define transfer fee. We have a stamp tax which is essentially a sales tax on the seller except in new construction, when the buyer typically pays it... not overly onerous. Doesn' matter how I feel about fees and taxes... they need to be paid.

Let there be no mistake, fees and taxes are always about giving politicians economic power to perpetuate their career. IF they find something that isn't taxed, they are going to tax it. It never about public good but political power.
I am in full support of fees and taxes that empower MY politicians. But, those on the others side, fees and taxes are EVIL.
