For a new agent, a broker that will give you the training and ongoing mentorship you need to become successful.  87% of new agents are out of the business within 2 years. It's an expensive dream if you don't work it properly.  You need a broker to help you defy the odds.

For an experienced agent, the needs are different.

Important.

And you have to be important to the broker too.

Just read in AR about it. You will be surprised.

I think the qualities you need to focus on are your qualities and what you have to offer. Also I think you need to be a bit more proactive with Brokers rather than ActiveRain. If you want to use ActiveRain for this dreadfully repetitive question, then use the search feature in the top left corner, next to the AR home button, it's been asked...and trust me it is easier for you and the rest of the students to search the last 3 years of this question than to keep asking us to repost our answers.

If it's a team you're considering, then the number 1 priority for me is accessibility. Commission splits, team resources, tools, etc. don't mean as much to me as a broker who's willing to pick up the phone or answer a text at 9pm on a Friday night. That kind of support is difficult to put a value on, or match for that matter.

This question comes up a lot & that's because we all want to start off on the right foot when we enter the business. As a new Agent I'd be looking for something different than an experienced agent would be. I'd look for a Broker who's knowledgeable & willing to share that to help develop you into the best agent you can be. Someone who is well respected in the industry because they may need to go to bat for you one day. Someone who is not competing with you for listings & is dedicated to developing the company & it's agents 1st. Qualities like that.

You will be an independent contractor, not an employee. You will hang your license with a broker, but your success will ultimately be up to you not your broker.

Choosing a broker is incredibly important.

Investing my time wisely is also important.

Need the real answer?

Invest the incredibly least possibler, an identity. You present yourself as so incredibly lazy that any investment is you is like hitting the lever on the flusher.

This is a personal preference. Everyone has different needs in their business which is why there are so many brokerages and so many different business models.  Of course the broker should be knowledgeable, available and honest. But what are YOU going to need?  Mentorship? Coaching? Training? Office Space? Signs & Business Cards? Leads and clients handed to you? A Team? Receptionist/Transaction Coordinator Available?  The question isn't what is most important, the question is What is most important to YOU. Good luck! -Kasey
