We dodged both of those hurricanes here in northwest Florida.
On a similar note, more automobiles were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Harvey than any natural disaster in world history. Car and Driver magazine had a fascinating article on it; estimates range from 500,000 to 1,000,000 wrecked or totalled cars.

That is so sad, Caroline - I had no idea how many properties were impacted. I can't imagine what the residents of those areas went through.

Default watchers predicted this would happen in the southern "Hurricane" states. A blip on the overall radar as defaults continue to plummet.

We just got heavy rain and wind. Other than that it didn't impact us.

That's really saddening to say the least, Caroline. Hoping home improvement resources and efforts come to rescue these homes from extinction. Is there any hope for them? - Tim

If people have not they certainly will Caroline Gerardo . Distressed properties were rare in our area until our flood in 2011. About 2 years after the flood they became very common regretfully.

Not in my market... distressed sales are about 1.3% of total sales... and essentially not due to natural disasters. I had no idea your problem was so huge.

It is clear the Insurance Companies have better attorneys and a strategic plan of delay and deny until the homeowner gives up is exhausted their savings. More criminal in this behavior are those insurance companies hired by the national FLood Insurance programs and Florida's state owned insurer CITIZENS.
These building will not be sold as distressed sales but will be deemed uninhabitable and will become builders infill targets.
One poor family has been living is a house without wall board since the storm. $68,000 estimated damage, $75,000 in legal bills so far.

East central Florida had high wind and rain but otherwise we were not impacted like the Gulf Coast was. In Florida, if over 50% of the propery is destroyed, it is deemed a total loss so there may not be much to foreclose on if the damage is that extensive.
After flooding such as Harvey did, there are always warnings to be careful when buying used cars since cars that were flooded but not damaged are often put on the market.
Anyone considering a used car need to order a CarFax report and get the vehicle history. It's cheap insurance and can help prevent an expensive mistake.
