Thank you Nina Hollander for your question and Andrew Mooers | 207.532.6573 for the response to enlighten me too.
One thing I know for sure is that website design that is done well, is a true art.

You know I have heard this BUT ... the post does not in any way specifically say that they slow down the site. I honestly don't see anyone using them. Mine did have one but only had 2 pics go buy after 2 mins.
Words like 'most probably' doesn't give me assurance on some of his reasons.

Dont know about photo sliders, but once in a while we get to the big city and enjoy a few Sliders for lunch.

I think if the photos are compressed, it won't slow down the site (which seems to be why most say we shouldn't use them). I have 3 sites - one has a fixed header and it's the slowest loading (probably because of all of the photos I have on the rest of the site!) One has a 'flash' photo show and the other you can 'scroll' through (optional).
The last two load very quickly.

I do not use them. Like most fashion trends, including website fashion trends, they tend to become dated in a short period of time.

I've seen split tests that show using a slider reduced conversion rates over 50%. I'd get rid of the slider.

Great question.
I guess people are under the false impression that a website must have an image covering the entire screen for it to be a "modern" website.
It's amazing how many people have huge images or sliders on their website with no immediate and clear call to action, and to make it worst, they do not have a top navigation, just the hamburger menu icon.
A side to side image is acceptable if it is not too high, so not to take the entire screen and has your most important call to action high on the page.
Do not make people look for things to do on your website, "tell" them what to do.

Good question Andrew Mooers | 207.532.6573 , I think it's because some web designers must like them. My site has one and I can't get it off because my designer abondend me.

Traditionally we do not as the perspective becomes distorted and full photo features are cut-off.
I think any feature on a page that gets a visitor to stay and click through is good. Not sure about these sliders though!
