aHrefs is the "authority" in this.  I also like SEOReviewTools.com

There are two kinds of authority, domain (DA) and page (PA).  DA refers to your entire domain and PA refers to that specific page.  There are a lot of factors involved with where a page ranks for a particular key word and DA/PA is just one of them (although arguably a major one).  In theory if the same exact content was on two sites, one with a DA of 10 and one with a DA of 2, the one with the DA of 10 would rank higher in the results.

Also note, DA/PA is calculated differently by various companies.  aHrefs has the best database and recently redid their formula for DA.  Where my site previously ranked in the mid 30s, it's now around 10-12.  Of course, most sites took a worse hit and they feel this is a more accurate representation, which I'm inclined to agree with after reading the blog on the change.

I think the best paid site is MOZ. I also use a free-checker from time-to-time, WebsiteGrader.com. It's clean and easy and includes tips to improve upon each graded category.

And, yes to your Page Authority question if I'm understanding you correctly - the better the authority, the higher the page-rank with the keyword phrases you're inquiring about.

So the techie correct answer is that Google no longer keeps page rank or domain authority figures:).

So since Google dropped Page Rank- the other companies like SEO MOZ, Majestic, SEMRush, and aHrefs, link assistant. .. took the previous data they had from Google, created algo to figure out the sites with the highest authority. So they are actually best guesses.

There are of course some obvious givens:

ActiveRain is going to have a higher domain authority than your own website in the real estate space.

Google will remain with the highest domain authority:) and YouTube coming up close behind with Amazon up there in the top 3.

For real estate space, you will still have the big z coming in with the highest domain authority because of direct traffic to the site, unfortunately.

Yes, in most cases, the site with the higher domain authority will show up higher for a specifc keyword in search , even if that keyword is not even optimized on their page.

There are many factors that are involved and a little website site like yours can beat the higher domain authority sites by optimizing the page you want to rank and by getting backlinks and social signals.

The best tool for this is SEMRush. But not the free version.

I use Majestic - the free version for overviews, which is really all you need.

1) I use Majestic

2) Higher # = better ranking?
Only if it were that easy :)
I have many examples that do not follow that.

Side note:
I use Spyfu to see what KWs a competitor's website is ranking for.

You are correct that a page will vary depending on the search engine. If I were you I would just stick with G. I just posted this last week in a bunch of places. Try FP Peeps about tools for page authority.

David, you are going to make your head explode.

I generally use Open site explorer from moz.  But, it is only a guideline.  Google stopped publishing page rank years ago, so this and all others are only guesses/approximations and their info isn't that accurate.  You can tell by looking at your own stuff...and what's missing and what's not accurate.  I occasionally use majestic, ahrehs, semrush and even alexa.  But, I tend to use them more for seeing where my competition has built backlinks, to then see if I can get one from the same place. I sometimes use to see key words they rank for/get topic ideas.
